Lead Practitioner of Modern Foreign Languages

Are you an exceptional MFL teacher with the vision, drive and ambition to lead the development of outstanding teaching and learning across a thriving secondary school? Do you have a deep-rooted passion for languages and a commitment to unlocking every student’s linguistic potential?

We are seeking an inspiring and dedicated Lead Practitioner of Modern Foreign Languages to join a vibrant and forward-thinking school community in Portsmouth from September 2025.




As Lead Practitioner of MFL, you will:

* Drive the development of high-quality teaching and learning within the MFL department and support excellence across the wider curriculum.

* Lead curriculum planning and development in MFL to ensure a broad, challenging, and engaging programme of study.

* Be a visible and proactive leader of professional development, modelling outstanding classroom practice and supporting the growth of teaching staff through coaching, mentoring, and CPD delivery.

* Use data intelligently to identify areas for improvement and implement effective strategies to raise attainment and achievement.

* Support the implementation of whole-school priorities, particularly in areas of teaching and learning, assessment for learning, and curriculum innovation.

* Play an active role in school self-evaluation and improvement planning, contributing to lesson observations, learning walks, and work scrutiny.

* Provide guidance and support in the delivery of intervention strategies for underachieving students.





Additional Responsibilities

* Act as a form tutor, supporting the academic and personal development of students and contributing to the pastoral support structure.

* Actively contribute to your assigned House group, promoting a culture of participation, community, and achievement.

* Assist with the transition of students into and out of key stages, particularly between KS2 and KS3, and KS4 and post-16 pathways.

* Support student voice initiatives, including feedback on teaching and learning and curriculum content.

* Collaborate closely with SEND and EAL teams to ensure inclusive and accessible language learning for all.

* Support the school’s behaviour for learning policies and uphold high expectations both in and outside of the classroom.





The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong academic background in MFL (French or Spanish essential; both desirable).

* A proven track record of outstanding teaching and student outcomes, ideally in a leadership or middle leadership role.

* A genuine passion for languages, global cultures, and educational excellence.

* The ability to inspire and lead others, building a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

* Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.

* A commitment to inclusive education and the ability to differentiate effectively.

* A drive to contribute to school life beyond the classroom, with a strong pastoral and community focus.
