The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Civil Engineer to join our Amey Consulting Structures team in Scotland. We have design hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen, with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn, and Huntly.
Our Amey Consulting Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.
Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, both being 8-year contracts extendable up to 12 years. Additionally, we have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.
These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages, involving some of the most exciting engineering projects related to Scotland’s arterial road network.
The role
Our Lead Senior Engineers are vital members of the Design team, working alongside our client, Transport Scotland. You will support the Design Team Leader on various civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions in compliance with all relevant standards and client requirements.
* Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
* Overseeing junior staff actions and taking responsibility for their work.
* Managing project budgets and controlling costs to ensure commercial success.
* Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
* Promoting effective health and safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
* Experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
* Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including relevant regulations and systems.
* Experience acting as the main engineering contact on projects, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
* Understanding of design and specification processes, capable of advising and checking designs.
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools, with the ability to review others’ work.
* Good understanding of CDM, risk assessment, hazard management, and mitigation.
* Capability to act as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
* People management skills, capable of leading a medium-sized, local discipline team.
* Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional license is desirable and may be essential on certain contracts.
