Overview
A vacancy for a full‑time Band 6 Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Nurse at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role is for an experienced band 5 or band 6 nurse looking for a new challenge.
Responsibilities
* Provide a comprehensive service for patients with MS in an outpatient environment.
* Deliver direct patient care, support, and education on symptom management and treatment.
* Act as a resource for other healthcare professionals.
* Promote and deliver a high standard of professional care while upholding NNUH’s PRIDE values.
* Develop, implement and evaluate care packages for MS patients.
* Work autonomously while being part of the multidisciplinary team.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records and information.
* Ensure patients are seen within recommended time scales and targets where applicable.
* Visit inpatients as appropriate to ensure continuity of care and provide advice.
* Accept referrals from medical and nursing staff both within and outside the Trust for newly diagnosed and existing patients.
* Periodically review caseload and discharge patients appropriately within divisional guidelines.
* Respond to telephone enquiries, coordinate admission or changes in appointment dates, and operate a telephone helpline for the specialty if required.
* Conduct comprehensive assessment of patient symptoms, liaise with the medical team, and organise investigations as required.
* Supply and administer medication according to Patient Group Directions and the Trust’s Prescribing Policy for registered nurse prescribers.
* Monitor treatment effectiveness, efficacy, and side effects, and implement changes or alternative therapies as appropriate.
* Communicate sensitive condition‑related information effectively with patients and carers in a timely, understandable manner, using different communication methods.
* Liaise with other specialist nurses, consultants, GP, dieticians, MDT members, voluntary agencies, national charities and other agencies within and outside the Trust.
* Work as an autonomous practitioner, prioritising own workload against patient and service needs.
* Assist the line manager in the provision of clinical and managerial leadership and support of nursing and clerical staff.
* Depute for senior colleagues in their absence as required.
Qualifications
* Registered nurse at Band 5 or Band 6.
* Background in neurology advantageous but not essential; training will be provided.
* Good communication and organisational skills.
* Willingness to learn new skills and expand knowledge.
* Experience working in an outpatient setting a plus.
