Job Overview

The National Specialist Adolescent Mood Disorders Service (NSAMS) is recruiting a dynamic Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Band 6. The role requires clinical experience with young people under 18 and preference for those working with mood disorders and co‑occurring conditions. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team, providing second opinion assessments, specialised management advice, and case‑management duties. Travel across the UK is required, including overnight stays; the applicant must be a qualified car driver.


Main duties of the job

* Physical health monitoring of patients
* Contribution in professional consultation meetings for local clinicians
* Assist with delivery of bipolar/mood disorders training
* Support engagement with young people and their carers
* Offer advice on medication to young people and their families


Person specification


Education and Qualification

* Professional Qualification and current Professional Registration as a First Level Registered Nurse (RNMH, RMN, RNLD) or equivalent as an AHP, Social Worker or Clinical Psychologist
* Evidence of post‑registration training in clinical/psychological interventions/skills relevant to the post
* Proven track record of post‑registration clinical experience relevant to the post
* Training in CPA (Care Programme Approach), Safeguarding, MAPPA (Multi‑Agency Panel for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults) and Child Protection
* Up‑to‑date knowledge/experience of relevant legislation


Knowledge and Experience

* 12 to 24 months band 5 qualified nurse experience, dependent upon service need
* Awareness and understanding of professional accountability, NMC standards and other local and national initiatives


Skills and Competencies

* Proven ability to carry out and provide comprehensive written assessments of individuals with complex mental health needs
* Risk assessment, risk management and safety planning skills
* Demonstrated understanding of effective treatment options, including evidence‑based clinical approaches identified in NICE Guidance
* Effective written and verbal communication skills
* High level of professional, organisational and leadership skills (self and others), ability to adapt within a changing environment
* Ability to work under pressure
* Excellent interpersonal skills
* Ability to use electronic recording and relevant IT equipment
* Ability to work effectively with other professionals using a multi‑agency approach

All applicants must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) and the Order 2020, and Disclosure & Barring Service submission will be required.
