Job Summary
The role involves laboratory reception duties such as checking sample quality, ensuring appropriate samples are received, assigning laboratory numbers, and entering requests into the laboratory computer system. Additional responsibilities include answering telephone and personal enquiries, filing, dispatching printed reports, issuing stocks, obtaining blood from patients, performing daily maintenance tasks, some laboratory testing, and attending clinics across Wye Valley NHS Trust.
The post holder must be available to support the 24/7 service as needed.
There are 2 full-time (1.0 WTE) and 1 part-time (0.5 WTE) positions available.
Main Duties
1. Receiving, sorting, numbering, and pre-analytical preparation of potentially infectious clinical specimens.
2. Ensuring correct samples are received and test codes are accurately assigned.
3. Communicating effectively with wards, departments, GP surgeries, and other stakeholders, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
4. Performing receptionist duties, including dealing with patients, visitors, and hospital staff.
5. Performing simple analytical processes under supervision, including near-patient testing.
6. Participating in the department's effective operation, ensuring high standards of work and timely completion.
7. Following current policies, regulatory requirements, and scientific principles, including laboratory quality procedures.
8. Assisting in the safe disposal of specimens and waste products.

Education & Qualifications
* Essential: Good numeracy and literacy skills, demonstrated by a minimum GCSE grade C in English and Mathematics or equivalent.
* Desirable: GCSE or equivalent in at least one science subject.
Experience
* Essential: Computer experience.
* Desirable: Experience of working in healthcare.
