General Description:
The Associate Instructor position teaches developmental and transfer-level courses in HVAC. Full-time teaching faculty are responsible for teaching various courses in the designated discipline/field of study. Teaching will potentially be in a variety of formats including face to face, remote, and online.
The Associate Instructor position is a restricted appointment with an instructional load of 33 to 39 credit hours and 39 to 49 contact hours over the academic year. This position is relieved of most administrative and governance duties to spend time in student support and student success related activities. The Associate Instructor contract contains no expectation or guarantees of continued employment.
This position is not telework eligible.
Duties and Tasks:
1. The primary responsibility of an Associate Instructor at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching.
2. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.
3. As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly
4. Submit required records and reports routinely
5. Teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct virtual student conferences as needed
6. Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.
7. Faculty are also expected to maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.
**This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.
Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia. Minimum Qualifications:
KSAs:
8. Practical application of the principles of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
9. Proficiency in installation and service of HVACR equipment.
10. Demonstrate the skills necessary to teach the fundamental and advanced concepts of installing and servicing HVACR equipment.
11. Ability to design, supervise, and evaluate lab assignments to demonstrate student proficiency.
12. Ability to use instructional technologies.
13. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
14. Ability to teach a combination of day, evening, and weekend classes.
15. Knowledge of HVAC Excellence standards.
Required Qualifications:
16. Associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies OR appropriately related education and/or occupational certifications combined with substantial related experience in the occupational field. Qualifying academic degrees and coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
17. A minimum of two years of full-time (or FT equivalent) related occupational experience. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.
18. Additional experience beyond the minimum is required for those applicants/candidates who do not possess a minimum of an associate’s degree in the teaching field.
19. Valid Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Universal Certification (EPA 40CFR of Section 608).
Additional Considerations:
20. Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field.
21. Community college or university level teaching experience.
22. Occupational experience (at least 5 years) in field.
23. Supervisory experience in HVACR.
24. Experience with commercial or industrial heating, cooling, and refrigeration.
25. HVAC Masters License.
26. Familiarity with industry-related credentials, such as NATE or ESCO.
27. Experience teaching a diverse student population.
28. Experience teaching hybrid courses and demonstrated proficiency and
experience in using instructional technologies and learning management
systems (e.g. Blackboard or Canvas).
29. An active DPOR HVAC (Tradesman) licensure.
