The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit is an internationally renowned institution focused on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease. Based within the University of Cambridge, the Unit is made up of PhD students, Post-docs and lead investigators that are all working to understand how things in our environment and the medicines we take affect our bodies so that we can make them safer. We couldn't do this without our amazing operations team who look after the daily running and upkeep of the Unit. We are looking for a reliable and well organised person to join the MRC Toxicology Unit as our Building Manager. You will play a key role in the smooth operation of the Building Services team across the Unit. The post is integral for maintaining the physical infrastructure, facilities and high-quality support services that allows research activities to continue in the Unit. You will report to the Head of Operations. Responsibilities Line management responsibility for the building services team. Overseeing the development and management of space and facilities for the Gleeson building. Management of projects from small redecorating projects to complex multiple refurbishment projects. Provide continuity plans and ensure key operations continue in the event of a major incident/event. Manage, develop and review service level agreements and service contracts. Understand the workings of all mechanical and electrical systems within the Unit, monitor and competently deal situations as they arise. Work with the University security office to ensure appropriate security arrangements for all occupied Unit buildings/areas. Manage hazardous (with laboratory support team) and non-hazardous waste from Unit buildings. Be technically competent in the operation of complex plant and equipment, carry out safety checks, be responsible for the diagnosis and repairs to specialist mechanical and electrical engineering plant and equipment and deal with new situations as they arise. Organise and oversee new works and planned maintenance activities with maintenance staff and external contractors. Ensure all safety documentation is in place (and archived) and all safety issues are actioned before work is undertaken. Carry out and supervise water hygiene routines ensuring routine inspections and planned maintenance. Carry out risk assessments and review them in conjunction with the Safety & Compliance Manager and other appropriate personnel. Maintain records and ensure fire safety and health & safety, including inspections, training and assisting with evacuations. Monitor stock and place orders when required. Act as the Unit’s Green Strategy Coordinator, responsible for establishing and promoting Green Strategy for the Unit. Qualifications and Experience Essential Degree level education in a relevant subject / or a professional qualification in a relevant mechanical trade (i.e. NVQ / City & Guilds). Experience of building maintenance. Proven and significant experience of contract negotiation. Experience managing projects and staff. Experience of supervising building/maintenance contractors. Experience of specialised electrical systems and expertise across a range of disciplines. Desirable NEBOSH qualification. Qualified plumber. BOAS qualification.
