Job Overview

There is an enthusiastic person required to join the Trust’s Medical Engineering team. The post-holder will manage staff and resources that maintain a wide range of medical/renal/ laboratory/CCTV equipment, and will contribute to routine maintenance, calibration and repair of over 30,000 medical devices including patient monitoring, ventilators and pathology equipment.

They will also be integral to design teams modernising and expanding the Trust’s Medical Equipment services, and will participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota.

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent in an electronic‑related discipline, significant supervisory experience in a medical‑electronics field, and a full UK driving licence.

Advert

* Planning, coordinating, implementing and delivering a programme of planned maintenance, including personal responsibility for specialist equipment.
* Planning and allocating the workload of reactive maintenance, sometimes with immediate responses required.
* Planning asset audits to ensure equipment operates at required software and hardware levels.
* Managing and leading a team of highly skilled Medical Engineering Technicians.
* Implementing necessary remedial actions recommended in Department of Health Safety Alert Bulletins or manufacturer’s alerts, modifications or software updates.
* liaising with medical, technical, supplies department, risk management staff and equipment manufacturers regarding technical information, including investigating and reporting adverse incidents and equipment defects to the MHRA.
* Taking a proactive approach to drive continuous improvement.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Part of the Leadership and Management Team within Medical Engineering; supports the management of EME/Dialysis/Loan Library/Instrument Curator departments and acts in the absence of the Medical Engineering Service Manager.
* Responsible for maintenance and repair of a broad spectrum of medical electronic devices requiring in‑depth engineering knowledge.
* Plans, manages and carries out planned maintenance, repair and servicing of specialist equipment and acceptance testing of new equipment.
* Trains medical and technical staff in the use of medical devices.
* Takes a lead role in major installations.

Person Specification


Knowledge & Experience – Essential Criteria

* Significant experience as a Senior/Specialist Technician in Medical Engineering.
* Comprehensive knowledge of relevant standards, regulations and codes of practice for medical device management.
* Knowledge of Department, Trust and NHS policies and procedures.
* Knowledge of current analogue and digital electronics.
* Working knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic and electro‑mechanical applications.
* Understanding of operation and calibration of diagnostic test equipment.
* Experience managing in an ISO 9001 environment.
* Evidence of CPD including management/leadership and specialist manufacturer training.
* Extensive knowledge of medical device management and related issues.
* Awareness of risk management and Health & Safety protocols.
* Degree level knowledge.


Desirable Criteria

* Management experience.
* Interest in Health & Safety matters.


Skills & Abilities – Essential Criteria

* Supervisor, Management and Organisational skills.
* Good interpersonal skills, in person and by telephone.
* Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, suppliers and customers at all levels.
* Ability to lead a team of highly skilled technicians and resolve difficult situations.
* Excellent analytical skills.
* Report writing skills.
* Computer use including database, word processing, internet and e‑mail.

* Teaching and presentation skills.


Qualifications & Education – Essential Criteria

* Bachelor’s level qualification, or HNC in Electronics or Medical Engineering, plus knowledge and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s level in a similar role.
* Current full UK driving licence.


Desirable Criteria

* Recognised IT competency qualification.
* Membership of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine or other relevant institute.
* Registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists.
