​ ​ Hours: 32.5 hours per week ( Monday – Friday 8:15am – 2:45pm). 37 weeks term-time only ​​ General: Mary Hare educates 156 profoundly deaf children at its residential school in Berkshire, and we pride ourselves on our pupils’ achievements at GCSE, A Level as well as B Tech and Vocational Courses. We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy. ​ The Role: The Science Technician will work in a purpose building with 6 laboratories and 6 science staff supporting very small class sizes (averaging 5 students). A broad knowledge of all science disciplines is required. Candidates should be organised with good attention to detail and the ability to use initiative, be able to follow safe working practices and prioritise workloads during busy periods. Strong interpersonal skills and a co-operative and flexible attitude are essential. ​ Main Duties and Responsibilities To communicate any personal training needs and undergo appropriate training as appropriate to meet the needs of the role. Prepare equipment, chemicals and other practical resources for class practicals and teacher demonstrations following requisitions provided by science teaching staff. Clear, clean, dispose and store equipment and chemicals following practical work in lessons. Restock labs on a regular basis with standard laboratory equipment. Make up accurate concentrations of chemicals as required and maintain a stock of regularly used chemicals and solutions for quick access. Maintenance, cleaning and basic repair of apparatus and equipment. Conduct scheduled safety checks and maintenance of lab facilities. Maintain labs and prep rooms in a tidy and clean condition, including cleaning sinks and keeping work surfaces clear. Ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment through actively contributing to the risk assessment, monitoring and review of both health & safety procedures and information resources. Support teaching staff in the classroom with practical tasks where required. Lead with the ordering of materials and equipment ensuring that appropriate stock levels of apparatus, chemicals and other resources are maintained. Assist in the printing and distribution of cover work for absent staff Act as a point of contact between reception and the department, when teachers are unable to get to the Science phone. Communicate with the site team on issues that will require their advice or assistance ​ ​ Person Specification Education Attainment & Competence Essential Desirable A science qualification at A Level standard or higher, or equivalent. A knowledge and appreciation of the importance of health and safety. Awareness of Safeguarding requirements and good practice within an education setting ​ Experience of working in the Science sector ​ Knowledge and Experience Experience working with children. Awareness of Safeguarding requirements and good practice within an education setting Experience of working in a SEND environment Be an excellent English Language role model. ​ Skills and Personal Qualities Excellent communication skills to enable effective dialogue with colleagues, staff, visitors and, where applicable, students. Able to perform well and remain professional whilst under pressure.
