Role Purpose The Marine General-Purpose Fitter keeps our fleet of line-handling boats and RHIBs, and associated equipment, at peak availability, operational, compliant and, above all, safe, while minimising downtime. The role requires hands-on maintenance and repair of mechanical systems, including fabrication where required, with minimal supervision. Experience of mid-size marine diesel engines is essential, but this may include equivalent non marine engines such as HGV. The successful candidate will be a flexible, resourceful and dependable team player, able to work unsupervised to a high standard and to propose their own solutions to problems. Experience as a coxswain of workboats or RHIBs would be beneficial but not essential. What you will do Mechanical Maintenance & Repair : Perform routine, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on engines, pumps, compressors, valves, gearboxes, and other auxiliary systems. Strip, inspect, overhaul, and reinstall mechanical components to OEM or class standards. Execute alignment, lubrication, tensioning, and related mechanical adjustments. Fabrication & Welding : Fabricate brackets, supports, structural elements etc as required. Conduct cutting, shaping, and welding in workshop and onboard environments. Deliver welds that meet the required strength and finish without multiple reworks. Pipefitting & Structural Work : Install, modify, and repair piping systems including seawater, fuel, lube oil, hydraulics, air, and cooling lines. Fit flanges, valves, gaskets, and connections with a clean, leak-free finish. Support basic steelwork and structural integrity tasks during docking, repairs, and routine operations. Marine Yard Experience : Prepare vessels for slipping; launch and recovery, assisting qualified personnel. Required Qualifications : Recognized trade qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Marine Fitting, or equivalent. Demonstrated experience in marine, offshore, shipyard, or heavy-industrial maintenance environments. Or equivalent similar e.g. heavy road vehicle. Capable of working in tight spaces, at height, and in variable environmental conditions. Desirable Qualifications : Strong fabrication and welding competence across most primary processes. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and convert instructions into execution. Previous Coxswain or equivalent experience and relevant qualifications, including: Boat Master License Certificate of Competence in Radio Telephony (VHF only).
