Group technical authority

Immingham
Associated British Ports
Posted: 27 August
Offer description

We're currently looking to recruit a Civil Engineering focused Technical Authority to set group standards, provide an official voice, and represent ABP externally to technical bodies shaping industry practice. A number of our assets date back to the Victorian era, and appreciation of older infrastructure is preferred, including bridges, quay walls, marine structures, lock gates, and road and rail infrastructure.

You'll be responsible for developing and implementing procedures, policies, guidance, and compliance measures to be rolled out across all our ports, ensuring they are adopted and embedded within the business. We're seeking an individual with strong influencing skills, a safety-first mindset, and operational experience in developing and implementing asset management plans.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Group's asset management systems, policies, procedures, and controls in response to business needs and risks.
2. Understanding external legislation and regulation, translating them into group policies and procedures, and guiding regional teams on technical safety matters to protect people and the company.
3. Monitoring, reviewing, and providing assurance reports on regional compliance with the Group's asset management policies and procedures.
4. Ensuring ABP remains knowledgeable in asset management and proactively pursues continuous improvement.
5. Collaborating with the Asset Data Manager to ensure robust asset master data and standardized scheduling and planning of inspections and maintenance across regions, aligned with best practices.
6. Working with the Group Asset Management team to identify and deploy technology and innovation supporting the Group's strategic goals.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

* Technical gravitas and a proven track record in high-hazard infrastructure industries.
* Experience managing physical infrastructure and equipment, including inspections, maintenance, and investment planning within an accredited management system.
* Strong analytical skills to interpret technical data and communicate findings effectively.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
* Leadership and influencing skills in managing multidisciplinary teams to safety, time, cost, and quality targets.
* Degree in a relevant technical discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status with the Engineering Council and membership of a relevant professional body.

While ideally based in the Humber region (Immingham or Hull), the role requires regular UK travel, with site visits a few times a month.

We are the UK's largest ports operator, managing 21 ports and handling about a quarter of the UK's seaborne trade, contributing £7.5 billion annually. We are transforming our business, embracing innovation, and fostering a culture of safety, diversity, and talent development. Our engineering teams are vital in maintaining and improving our assets, ensuring operational excellence.

Joining ABP offers a welcoming yet challenging environment with competitive remuneration, benefits, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. We support training, education, and development, and promote an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
