This Fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for a doctor interested in medical education, research and endoscopy training to develop practical research skills, contribute to educational innovation, and work at the interface of clinical education and academic development .

The postholder will spend approximately two days per week working with the Midlands Endoscopy Training Academy (META), supporting research, evaluation, and development and delivery of educational programmes across the regional endoscopy training network. The remainder of the time will be devoted to education research, teaching, and leadership development within the host Trust's Medical Education Department.

The role is ideal for:

Gastroenterology Higher Specialty Trainees seeking Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) or Out of Programme Research (OOPR), and

Doctors aspiring to pursue a career in medical education, academia, or educational leadership .

Key Responsibilities

1. Research and Scholarship

Design, conduct, and disseminate research projects aligned to local and regional education priorities in gastroenterology and endoscopy training.

Undertake literature reviews, develop study protocols, seek ethical approvals, and carry out qualitative and/or quantitative data collection and analysis.

Work with academic and NHS partners to evaluate educational interventions (e.g. simulation, faculty development, procedural competence, trainee experience).

Prepare outputs for regional, national, and international dissemination through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

Contribute towards preparation of study documentation and participating in site visits.

Ensure the accurate, complete and timely collection, recording and management of all research data, whether in electronic or paper format. This includes maintaining the confidentiality of information and the security of research data at all times, aligning with RWT's data and privacy policies.

1. Midlands Endoscopy Training Academy (META)

Contribute to META projects focused on improving access, quality, and consistency of endoscopy training across the Midlands.

Support evaluation of training outcomes, faculty development initiatives, and digital learning innovations.

Assist in organising and delivering regional educational events and workshops.

Collaborate with META leads, clinical trainers, and partner sites to translate research into educational practice.

Attend multidisciplinary team meetings relevant to ongoing research projects where appropriate and feasible to understand the context of the research.

1. Education and Training

Participate in postgraduate education delivery, simulation, and supervisor development programmes within the host Trust.

Support evaluation and quality improvement of education and training programmes.

Develop and deliver teaching sessions, workshops, and presentations relevant to medical education and gastroenterology.

Option to enrol in a Postgraduate Certificate or MSc in Medical Education if not already held (subject to funding).

1. Leadership and Collaboration

Work with the Deputy Dean, the DME, and META leadership to align research and educational activity with service and regional priorities.

Engage with regional and national medical education networks.

Contribute to strategic priorities in educational innovation and workforce development.

Rigorously adhere to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, established research governance frameworks, local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and all relevant Trust policies, regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines.

Supervision and Support

The Fellow will be jointly supervised by:

A named Academic Supervisor

The Midlands Endoscopy Academy Lead for project-specific oversight.

The Director of Medical Education (DME) or their deputy for local professional development and integration.

Regular progress reviews will support development in research methodology, scholarly writing, and academic presentation .

Training and Development Opportunities

Structured supervision

Opportunities to present at educational and specialty conferences.

Support to prepare abstracts and manuscripts for publication.

Optional enrolment in a PGCert/MSc in Medical Education.
