Consultant in Spinal Surgery

The successful candidate will have responsibility for the management of both elective and acute patients, including spinal on‑call. Candidates with a background in either orthopaedics or neurosurgery will be considered.

Main duties of the job
You will have significant spinal surgery experience and join a large team of existing orthopaedic consultants within the Trust, which includes six established spinal consultants. The spinal unit sees a large volume of patients and provides satellite clinics in a number of community locations. The unit is well resourced with its own clinic and a dedicated spinal ward and theatres within the broader orthopaedic footprint.
The spinal team provides a full range of general and specialised surgical interventions, with the exception of intra‑dural work and paediatric scoliosis. 3D imaging and computerised navigation are available.
Job responsibilities
You will be expected to participate in student and postgraduate teaching. You should possess FRCS or equivalent, have completed a Higher Specialist Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery, and possess full GMC registration with a licence to practice and be eligible for entry on the GMC Specialist Register by one of the following routes:
* Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) – the proposed CCT must be within six months of the interview date.
* Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) – CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application.
Additional responsibilities include the provision of teaching clinical skills, contribution to clinical audit and Quality Improvement Projects, and application of evidence‑based research into everyday clinical practice.
Qualifications & Eligibility
* MBBS / MBChB or equivalent.
* MRCS and FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) or (Neurosurgery) or equivalent higher qualification.
* Life Support Qualifications – ATLS.
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at the time of application.
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry on Specialist Register within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
* Additional higher medical or scientific degree relevant to the specialty.
* Training qualification.
Clinical Experience
* Evidence of independent clinical practice.
* At least one year of NHS experience.
* Interest in an area of the specialty complementary to existing consultants.
Management and Administrative Experience
* Commitment to continuing professional development and the requirements of clinical governance, including reporting errors and learning from them.
* Experience of formal presentations.
* Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties.
* Attendance of a management or leadership course.
Teaching Experience, Audit and Research
* Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students.
* Ability and experience of teaching clinical skills.
* Experience and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP).
* Evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence‑based research into everyday clinical practice.
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements.
* Specific teaching qualification.
* Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates.
* Attendance of a recognised teaching training course.
