This is a rare opportunity to help maintain 21 historic lighthouses – many in some of the UK's most awe‑inspiring and remote coastal environments.
This role is suited to estates, building or civil maintenance professionals and does not necessarily require chartered or graduate engineer status.
Based in Harwich, Essex, this role involves working predominantly across the East and South Coast of England and Gibraltar, with occasional travel to Wales, Cornwall, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and other UK coastal locations.
You will play a key role in preserving nationally significant heritage assets while supporting the UK's vital maritime Aids to Navigation. The working environments can vary from land‑based installations to those that are offshore, with modes of transport for access ranging from van/car, ships or helicopter. Given the locations of the stations, you could be spending significant time away from home. This, coupled with the physical nature of the duties involved, calls for appropriate levels of health and fitness.
Responsibilities
* Prepare technical specifications and work with the Procurement Team to procure best‑value civil maintenance contracts.
* Assess and appoint technically suitable contractors for civil works.
* Undertake duties of Client under CDM Regulations and ensure full CDM compliance.
* Work with the Estates and Property Management Team to ensure all necessary planning permissions and listed building consents have been obtained prior to works.
* Manage contractors on site, ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification and to agreed quality standards.
* Monitor works and maintain accurate records within the appropriate management information systems (MMIS).
* Work collaboratively with the Building Services team to maintain estate asset data and engineering standards.
Skills and Experience
* Proven experience in building / estates maintenance and contractor management.
* Experience preparing specifications and tender documentation.
* Strong understanding of HSE requirements within construction, particularly CDM Regulations.
* Experience working with maintenance management information systems.
* Ability to manage work across geographically dispersed and occasionally remote locations.
* Knowledge of heritage or listed buildings (desirable).
Qualifications
* Level 4 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a Civil Engineering, Building or Estate Management discipline.
* Full UK driving licence.
