An apprentice in one of the 600+ Halfords Autocentres is involved in servicing, inspections, and a range of repair work, from simple parts replacement to diagnosing faults with diagnostic equipment. The role is adaptable, requires problem-solving, and involves learning from college lecturers, colleagues and mentors to diagnose and repair vehicles to the highest standard. The day-to-day work changes with evolving technologies and diagnostic techniques.
Responsibilities
* Perform servicing, inspections, and repair work on a variety of makes and models
* Diagnose faults using diagnostic methods and equipment
* Work independently and as part of a team, understanding the workshop and Autocentre operations
* Learn from college lecturers, colleagues and mentors to gain skills to diagnose and repair vehicles
Working week
* Autocentre opening hours: 08:00 – 18:00 (6/7 days per week)
* Five-day working week including one day at college (day release)
* Total hours per week: 40 for under 18; 44 hrs for over 18

What will I learn?
During the programme, apprentices gain knowledge and skills to become competent technicians, covering workplace safety, engineering skills, vehicle inspection and servicing, maintenance, repair and diagnosing faults in engines, chassis and electrical systems.
Qualifications and qualities
* Qualifications Required: GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade C or above (or equivalents)
* Desired Skills: Friendly, helpful, team-oriented with a desire to build a career as an Auto Vehicle Technician
* Interest in cars and solving problems
* Ability to use hands and a strong, fit attitude for manual work
* Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance
* Enjoys fixing problems with cars
* Knowledge of Microsoft packages
* Personal qualities: Practical application of knowledge and skills; organised, methodical, pays attention to detail; able to work in a team and communicate well; cares about delivering excellent service; analytical and mechanical aptitude; flexibility and willingness to learn
