Role Overview

The Financial Accountant will act as the Finance Director's key number two, taking ownership of core finance processes and ensuring the finance function runs smoothly, accurately, and on time.

Initially, the focus will be on strong execution: maintaining clean accounts, running month-end, managing purchase ledger, payroll, VAT, audit preparation, cashflow reporting, and supporting budgets and projections.

Over time, the role is expected to broaden into more commercial finance, forecasting, analysis, and decision-support work as the business scales.
This role would suit a newly qualified or recently qualified accountant who is hands-on, technically strong, organised, and comfortable working in a fast-moving growth business. We would also consider an exceptional part-qualified or qualified-by-experience candidate with the right capability and attitude.

Role Impact & Value Sought

Within the first 6–12 months, the successful candidate will have:

• Taken ownership of month-end close and management accounts.
• Improved the reliability and timeliness of financial reporting.
• Built confidence that purchase ledger, payroll, VAT, reconciliations, and audit preparation are under control.
• Reduced dependency on the Finance Director for day-to-day finance operations.
• Helped make the finance function more scalable, documented, and resilient.
• Built trust across the business as a dependable finance operator.
• Created enough control and continuity that the Finance Director can step away from day-to-day finance matters when required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Financial control & Day-to-day finance

• Own the day-to-day finance operation, ensuring transactions are processed accurately and on time.
• Manage purchase ledger, supplier payments, reconciliations, and expense processes.
• Maintain accurate bookkeeping and general ledger integrity.
• Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed regularly and reviewed appropriately.
• Improve the quality, consistency, and reliability of finance processes as the business scales.

Month-end & Management accounts

• Lead the month-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, cashflow, and supporting analysis.
• Investigate variances and provide clear commentary on financial performance.
• Support the Finance Director in producing reporting packs for senior leadership and stakeholders.
• Help shorten and improve the month-end close cycle over time.
• Manage purchase ledger, supplier payments, reconciliations, and expense processes.

Payroll, VAT, Tax & Compliance

• Manage payroll processes, working with external providers where relevant.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns.
• Support statutory reporting, tax compliance, and other regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure finance processes are audit-ready.

Audit & Year-end

• Coordinate the annual audit process and act as a key point of contact for auditors.
• Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
• Help resolve audit queries efficiently and ensure deadlines are met.
• Strengthen controls and documentation to reduce year-end friction.

Cashflow, Budgeting & Forecasting

• Prepare and maintain cashflow reporting and short-term cash visibility.
• Support the Finance Director with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial projections.
• Help improve forecasting accuracy and reporting discipline.
• Provide analysis to support decision-making across the business.

Process Improvement & Scalability

• Identify opportunities to improve finance systems, controls, and ways of working.
• Help build a finance function that can scale with the business.
• Reduce dependency on the Finance Director for routine finance operations.
• Bring structure, ownership, and reliability to core finance processes.

What You'll Bring

• Qualified Accountant – ICAS, ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA
• Strong technical accounting knowledge and attention to detail.
• Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data.
• Highly organised, reliable, and able to manage deadlines without heavy supervision.
• Hands-on mindset — willing to get into the detail and make sure things are right.
• Clear communicator who can explain financial information simply and confidently.
• High standards, sound judgement, and strong ownership.
• Bring structure, ownership, and reliability to core finance processes.
• Someone who is comfortable being both detail-oriented and commercially curious.

Candidate Profile

This is not a role for someone who wants a narrow reporting-only position. It needs someone who takes pride in running a clean finance operation and wants to grow into a broader finance leadership role over time.

We are open to applications from candidates from the following backgrounds:

• Someone from practice who wants a broader, more hands-on finance role in a scaling company

Or

• A strong industry accountant ready to step into a more autonomous position.
