What will you be doing?
You'll help keep our nation moving every day. As a technician, you will contribute to the daily upkeep of the rail network, working outdoors in a team to support essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Technicians come from a variety of backgrounds. We focus on transferable skills and behaviours and provide all necessary training to work safely and competently on the network. Role Details (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. You will specialise in Track Maintenance. You will work outside in all conditions, day or night, and may perform demanding manual work including transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player is critical as you may work next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
You matter to your team: you will be able to lead when asked, ensure safe work practices, and help ensure the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards. You will also model safe working behaviours and challenge risks to safety so everyone gets home safely.

Your skills matter: you don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you should demonstrate transferable skills that meet the following requirements:
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery
* Effective communication – strong communication skills to give clear instructions
* Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in your discipline
* Safety – model safe behaviours, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations
* Problem solving – persistently seek safe and effective solutions and stay up-to-date with standards
* Willingness to learn – continuously develop relevant skills and stay current with procedures
* Relevant qualification – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline or equivalent experience

* Shifts – Changing pattern including days, nights and weekends
* Outdoor working – Comfortable in different weather conditions
* Safety checks – Pre-employment checks including drug/alcohol testing, medical assessment and BPSS; hearing and eyesight examinations may be required
* Driving – A category B driving licence is needed to drive Network Rail vehicles
* Commute – Within a 60-minute commute of the location you’re applying to
