Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our well-established Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery team, as a Deputy Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are looking an enthusiastic nurse who can join our team for 9 months to cover maternity leave.

We treat children in various clinical settings such as ED, outpatients and those admitted to our paediatric inpatient wards. As a tertiary centre we see both acute and chronic conditions - some as emergency cases and others for elective procedures - who require highly specialised management by our paediatric orthopaedic surgery team. This includes trauma and congenital deformities for all age range with complex needs.

The successful candidate will be involved with nurse-led clinics. Supporting patients on the complex MDT pathway, telephone triage and co-ordinate the paediatric in-patients list and reviews.

They will act as a resource for expert advice for other healthcare professionals and must be competent to deliver health promotion and education to parents, their families and others.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to cover maternity leave (for 9 months), and become a part of our well established Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery team. We highly recommend to get in touch with us, if you interested. You will be supported by the Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialists, and our multidisciplinary team.

You will act as a key specialist and an expert within the team providing specialist advice, education and support to health care professionals and patients and their families.

As part of your role you will take part in delivering direct clinical care to children and families through outpatient clinics, both face to face and other methods.

You will teach and support nursing and medical staff when caring for families within the Evelina London Children's Hospital and will be responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will provide clinical supervision to other staff, students and may undertake research, lead clinical audits in own specialist area.

Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles

1. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of specialist nursing advice and carries out specialist nursing procedures.
2. Providing specialist nursing care to children and their families
3. Supporting clinician led clinics- skin prick testing, family teaching and spirometry
4. Performing food and drug provocation challenges, venom and aeroallergen immunotherapy alongside the senior nursing team
5. Recognising and treating allergic reactions promptly and safely
6. Safeguarding role- to act upon and/or escalate safeguarding concerns to appropriate team members
7. Participating in teaching to families/junior staff; adrenaline autoinjectors, inhalers, nasal sprays
8. Upholding the trust values at all times
9. Working within the NMC code at all time
10. Provide a leadership role model, demonstrate specialist knowledge, high standards of clinical practice and provide support or advice when necessary

Qualifications

Essential criteria

11. Mentorship qualification
12. BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience nursing
13. NMC registered children's nurse

Desirable criteria

14. Evidence of leadership development

Experience

Essential criteria

15. Post registration experience within orthopaedics
16. Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the paediatric orthopaedics
17. Experience of teaching and assessing others in a clinical setting

Skills

Essential criteria

18. Knowledge of evidence based practice
19. Demonstrates an understanding of audit and research based nursing practice
20. Evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching
21. Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information. To include dealing with distressed relatives.
