Job overview

The Clinical Decisions Unit and Same day emergency care unit at Glenfield Hospital is emergency admission unit of all cardiac and respiratory admissions in Leicester.

It has its own designated Triage and 16 trolleyed Assessment area. It also has a 27 bedded area which is fully monitored. Also an ambulatory unit run by GPs, ACPs and nursing teams.

Unique to other Admission’s Unit nationally, patients are admitted direct via 999 calls, Emergency Department Referral, Urgent Care Centre and GP referral with a range of cardiac and respiratory conditions. CDU also takes admissions from within the Trust; CDU is a demanding area to work in but with so much opportunity for learning and development it is a rewarding team to be part of.

As a Staff Nurse working in CDU you will have the opportunity to learn about emergency and acute care, additionally many opportunities for further development exist within this large unit.

GH campus is a regional centre for clinical research with both Respiratory and Cardiac Biomedical research units based here and has close links with both the University of Leicester and DeMontfort University.

Main duties of the job

* Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidenced-based nursing care to a group of patients.
* Assisting and contributing in the management and organisation of a ward / clinical area.
* Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
* Actively participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members.
* Act as a clinical and professional role model, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement within the clinical area.
* Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Perform comprehensive assessments of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
* Take responsibility for the care needs of individual allocated patients.
* Co-ordinate, organise and prioritise the allocated workload.
* Recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
* Provide advice, education, support and information to family members / carers as required and involve them in the planning and delivery of care.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and other family members / carers. Facilitate effective communication and liaison with other disciplines as necessary to meet the needs of patients, especially relating to on-going care needs and discharge arrangements.
* Ensure that fully accurate, complete and contemporaneous nursing records are written and maintained for each patient in accordance with agreed policy.
* Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and information relating to patient / users and personnel is used only in connection with authorised duties. Use health related information only for the purposes of what it is intended for and in accordance with the Data Protection act.
* Continually monitor standards of nursing care and contribute to improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research.

Qualifications Academic/ Professional

* Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
* Level 2 / GCSE or equivalent English and maths or Functional Skills
* Placement experience working within the 4 fields of nursing


Knowledge Requirements

* Understands and acts in line with the NMC professional standards for practice contained with The Code and NMC Standards of Proficiency
* Understands the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in the context of nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation and how the role may contribute to service development
* Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice;
* Ability to participate in reflective practice and understand the requirements for NMC Revalidation;
* Understands the importance of following procedures and treatment plans.
* Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practice
* Has experience in supporting learners in the workplace and supervising their progress and / or assessing their practice
* Demonstrates knowledge of clinical governance and clinical effectiveness
* Demonstrates an understanding of current issues relating to the NHS
* Has successfully completed an previous NMC Approved Teaching and Assessing or Practice Assessor programme or equivalent


Skills

* Ability to deliver patient-centred care
* Ability to recognise when escalation to a registered professional is required (e.g. registered nurse / doctor)
* Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical supervision activities
* Ability to organise and prioritise own delegated workload

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
