Overview
The ENT Clinical Directorate offers a high quality, safe and patient-focused service. The Directorate is part of the Division of Planned Care. The ENT Department at the West Middlesex Hospital provides inpatient day surgery and outpatient services for the surrounding area, serving the patients of Richmond, Twickenham, Brentford, Hounslow, Chiswick and adjacent areas. It is a busy and rapidly growing department providing a comprehensive range of ENT services with strong links to Community and General Practitioners and other hospital specialties.
Over 90% of ENT surgery is day-surgery, with adult and paediatric care. Inpatients are nursed on two wards with an average length of stay of about one night. The department treats ENT surgical paediatric cases from age one upwards.
Job responsibilities
1. Roles of the post
o Monthly ENT Audits and Head and Neck MDT/clinics take place at West Middlesex Hospital; consultants are expected to participate actively.
o A team of administrators supports the Department; the appointed consultant will have administrative duties to fulfil.
o The successful candidate will work with the MDT, including a Specialist Nurse, Outpatient Team, Audiology and Speech Therapy, together with management and administration staff, and will collaborate with the wider surgical team, A&E and Acute Medicine to achieve Trust KPIs.
2. Provide High Quality Care to Patients
o Adhere to GMC Good Medical Practice standards.
o Develop and maintain necessary competencies to perform the post duties.

3. Research, Teaching and Training
o Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other health care professionals; contribute to training of medical trainees and staff groups.
o Act as clinical supervisor and appraiser as delegated to ensure external accreditation of training posts.
o Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance translational research/audit portfolio; meet Research Governance requirements.
o Ensure mandatory training is up to date and participate in continuing professional development; manage study leave as per contract terms; undertake leadership development as required.
4. Performance Management
o Collaborate with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to achieve high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management and operational efficiency (e.g., LOS reductions, day-case rates, reduced cancellations, infection targets, cost improvement programmes, data accuracy).
5. Medical Staff Management and Accountability
o Ensure junior doctors’ hours comply with EWTD/New Deal; manage leave and on-call commitments; ensure coverage and reporting of absences.
o Participate in recruitment, induction and annual job planning; supervise and appraise doctors in training and non-consultant staff as delegated.
o Engage in regular departmental activities, meetings and team-building.
6. Governance
o Adhere to ENT MDT referral pathways; review outcomes using benchmarking data and implement resulting actions.
o Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis; support clinical and service developments; ensure NICE, NSF, CNST and other guidance is implemented and monitored.
o Maintain up-to-date clinical guidelines and infection control practices; report incidents promptly.
7. Strategy and Leadership
o Contribute to business planning, objective setting and external clinical networks; attend and contribute to departmental meetings as identified by the Clinical Lead.
o Demonstrate leadership in clinical teams and Trust-wide initiatives; collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and Imperial College as required.
8. Appraisal & Revalidation
The post holder participates in the annual appraisal system in line with Trust guidelines; annual appraisals and updated job plans are submitted to the Medical Director or HR Director. Ensure timely preparation of portfolios and mandatory requirements.
Qualifications and requirements
* Education and Qualifications
o Full GMC Registration
o Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence confirmed by PMET/GMC by date if AAC); entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months of AAC date
o MD or equivalent higher postgraduate training
o Good understanding of and adherence to GMC Good Medical Practice
* Clinical Experience
o Broad-based ENT training suitable for a UK CCS
* Skills & Knowledge
o Solid understanding of the Clinical Governance agenda, with CNST experience; experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training
