The Role
As a Senior Engineer within the Multidisciplinary Civil Engineering team, you’ll provide civil engineering expertise to support a wide range of asset, project and management‑related engineering activities. You’ll assess complex engineering problems and develop viable, value‑led solutions that meet safety, performance and business objectives. Working within established engineering governance, you’ll provide professional advice, challenge and assurance to ensure engineering outcomes are safe, compliant, sustainable and deliver long‑term value.
Initial Assignment – Elizabeth Line (RfLi)
You’ll initially join Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLi) as the Lead Civil Asset Engineer, for the Central Operating Section of the Elizabeth Line (Abbey Wood to Paddington) and Great Eastern stations.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
* Reviewing, developing and maintaining RfLi Civils standards
* Assessing and approving derogations and concessions
* Producing and maintaining asset management plans for civils assets, including tunnels, drainage, railway and station structures
* Leading maintenance assurance and verification activities
* Renewals and enhancements technical support; to specify and assure (Great Eastern building and station/railway structure refurbishment, Custom House bridge waterproofing, Connaught tunnel water ingress improvement, New Plumstead Warehouse, Abbey Wood Sidings)
* Approving temporary works designs and supporting Infrastructure Protection activities where required
You’ll work closely with key stakeholders, including the operator GTS and other engineering disciplines, to coordinate and resolve issues that affect civils asset performance and railway operability.
About You
You’ll be a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Member of ICE or another recognised institution (or working towards chartership), with strong knowledge of civil engineering standards, legislation and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide senior civil engineering input to programmes of work across TfL
* Lead and assure complex engineering solutions and asset changes
* Examine engineering problems and develop effective, proportionate solutions
* Undertake risk‑based reviews, monitoring and assurance of works
* Provide authoritative technical advice and professional challenge to stakeholders
Support engagement with suppliers, Network Rail and external bodies
* Apply and maintain engineering standards, legislation and best practice, acting as Delegated Authority where assigned
* Promote continuous improvement, whole‑life cost optimisation, sustainability and carbon reduction
You’ll bring knowledge, skills and experience across several stages of the asset lifecycle and demonstrate the ability to:
* Apply sound engineering judgement to complex technical challenges
* Lead and influence multi‑disciplinary engineering teams
* Understand and apply risk management, value engineering and whole‑life asset management
* Manage system interfaces within a complex transport environment
* Build effective working relationships and positively influence stakeholders at all levels
Experience working with Network Rail standards (NR/L2/RSE/02009, NR/L2/CIV/003 and NR/L2/CIV/1000) and assurance frameworks, including roles such as NR Project Engineer, NR Asset Engineer or NR Designated Project Engineer, is highly beneficial.
