The Role
As a Graduate Estates Trainee (Engineering), you will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team within your employing organisation. The role is designed to support learning and development through observation, participation and hands‑on experience of engineering processes, practices and procedures.
NHS engineers maintain and repair a wide range of essential facilities and equipment, including hospital buildings, ambulances, dialysis machines, electrical systems and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The Post Graduate Engineer Standard is critical in meeting the future skills needs of the NHS and covers a broad range of engineering disciplines.
Key Responsibilities and Experience
During the programme, graduates will support engineering professionals at all levels and gain experience across multiple areas on a rotational basis. This may include:
* Maintaining and managing NHS properties and estates
* Organising repairs, servicing and planned maintenance
* Supporting and project managing building works and refurbishments
* Contributing to sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives
* Assisting with policy development and compliance
* Supporting recruitment, training and staff development
* Assisting with staff management, including absence and discipline
* Supporting budget management and financial control
Locations and Opportunities
Six graduate posts are currently available across England.

Eligibility Criteria
Essential
* A minimum 2.2 degree in an engineering‑related discipline
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within teams
* Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure
* A positive, proactive and enthusiastic approach
* Commitment to completing the three‑year training scheme
* A genuine interest in engineering and a career within the NHS
* Willingness to travel to various NHS sites, if required
Desirable
* Experience of working as part of a team and building professional networks
* Administrative experience
* Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
All roles are open to applicants with a valid visa, provided they have been living in the UK and resident for at least three years (not for educational purposes) prior to September 2026.
