Main duties of the job
You will supervise the Immunology laboratory, assist in staff development, and support the clinical biochemistry laboratory 24/7 rota where required.
All duties are performed in accordance with UKAS and ISO 15189 standards and align with the trust’s quality management system.
Full training will be provided if necessary.
Person specification
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
* IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Immunology) or MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent FIBMS status
* Evidence of ongoing CPD and specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry and/or Immunology
* Additional relevant qualifications such as training certificates, leadership or management courses
Experience
* Sound knowledge of Immunology practice, underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
* Competence in automated laboratory environments and problem‑solving skills
* Awareness of current professional issues and familiarity with ISO 15189 systems and standards
* Broad understanding of quality control, quality management and audit, including CAPA/DATIX investigations
* Good practical knowledge of health and safety issues, including COSHH, fire regulations and risk assessments
* Experience of leading a laboratory section and staff management
* Knowledge of Winpath LIMS and experience within an HCPC registered NHS training laboratory
Key Skills
* Excellent organisational and time‑management skills, ability to coordinate workflow, determine staff rosters
* Representative of the department in internal meetings
* Ability to assess and act appropriately in urgent situations
* Competent in a broad range of Immunology practical techniques and technical validation of results
* Technical problem‑solving (equipment failure, quality control failure)
* Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
* Ability to comprehend complex facts and formulate relevant responses
* Strict compliance with policies and procedures set by the laboratory, Trust and other regulatory bodies
* PC literacy, laboratory computerisation and office applications
* Team‑working mindset and self‑motivation
* Experience with ImmunoCAP 250, Optilite, Quantalyser 3000, Dynex DS2, Capillarys 3 Octa
Career and Work Environment
Position is Grade Band 7, full‑time (37.5 hours per week). The role may be based mainly at Peterborough City Hospital with sporadic support at other NWAFT sites and requires participation in the 24/7 rota for Clinical Biochemistry if needed.
