Senior Environmental Manager
Join the State of Indiana as a Senior Environmental Manager serving as the Indiana Army National Guard Training Site Environmental Compliance Manager.
Role Overview
This position oversees the environmental compliance for a 34,250‑acre training center, managing air, storm water, drinking water, wastewater, hazardous and solid waste, pest management, NEPA, spill prevention, historical buildings, cultural and natural resources. The role is senior‑level and requires solving complex regulatory problems and implementing technical requirements that directly affect military readiness and environmental protection.
Key Responsibilities
 * Interpret laws, regulations, and guidelines for assigned environmental program areas.
 * Develop and modify existing state programs to adapt to changes in federal or state legislation.
 * Coordinate review of environmental projects and program areas to meet program needs and objectives.
 * Maintain a tracking system to ensure projects progress through appropriate program processes in acceptable timeframes.
 * Prepare written communications including responses to letters of inquiry and other documents.
 * Chair or facilitate work‑related committees as needed.
 * Utilize programs and electronic database systems to meet area needs and serve as a subject‑matter expert.
 * Research, analyze, and report on priority projects and their progress.
 * Perform audits on environmental programs or facilities and recommend corrective action or improvements.
 * Provide technical assistance and evaluate compliance to environmental regulations and programs.
 * Coordinate review of requests for variance and exemptions from environmental program regulations.
 * Review program plans for completeness, economic and technical feasibility, and environmental impact.
 * Design and direct projects on complex environmental issues, providing analysis and logistics expertise.
 * Prepare progress reports for management and senior leadership and provide consultation to staff.
 * Review and evaluate technical work reports and supporting data for conformance with federal requirements.
 * Assign and review work of lower‑level staff members.
Requirements
 * Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, or related field.
 * Six (6) years of work experience in an environmental or environmental public health field.
 * Extensive knowledge of environmental management theories, practices, and principles.
 * Thorough knowledge of federal and state regulations and the ability to apply them.
 * Ability to conduct surveys, inspections, investigations, and prepare regulatory action documents.
 * Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with government representatives.
 * Ability to prepare accurate and thorough reports, develop and define procedures, and meet deadlines.
 * Capability to interpret and implement public policy as it relates to environmental rules or laws.
 * Effective performance of essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
