Brilliant Dyes, a deep‑tech spinout from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, is seeking a talented and motivated Industrial Process Automation Engineer to join our team. This is a full‑time, 4‑month position (with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability). The role can also be offered part‑time to two current final‑year PhD students at Imperial College London with relevant expertise.

Brilliant Dyes is an award‑winning deep‑tech spinout developing sustainable, natural dyes from algae for use in textiles, cosmetics, and the food industry. Co‑founded by Mohammad Redwanur Rahman, Dr Md Tabish Noori, and Professor Klaus Hellgardt at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London.

The Industrial Process Automation Engineer will play a key role in developing, simulating, and optimising Brilliant Dyes’ scalable bioprocess for sustainable dye production from algae. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process engineering, digital twins, and automation, with hands‑on expertise in ASPEN PLUS/DWSim and AutoCAD. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of industrial biotechnology, digital process optimisation, and sustainable manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and simulate process models using ASPEN PLUS or DWSim to optimise productivity and improve energy efficiency.
* Integrate process data into digital twins and identify automation strategies for scale‑up.
* Support process design and layout development using AutoCAD.
* Collaborate with R&D and analytical teams to validate process parameters and outcomes.
* Contribute to Brilliant Dyes’ ongoing sustainability and circular economy initiatives.
* Prepare technical reports and present findings to the directors and research teams.

Required Qualifications and Experience

* PhD in Chemical Process Engineering, Automation, Digital Twin, or Process Optimization; OR 3–5 years of relevant industrial experience.
* Strong expertise in ASPEN PLUS or DWSim and AutoCAD.
* Demonstrated experience with process automation, control systems, and simulation workflows.
* Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
* Strong scientific paper and patents writing, good communication skills.
* Must have the right to work in the UK (we do not sponsor any work Visa).

Desirable Skills

* Experience in computation process simulation and model development.
* Work experience with PLC, HMI/SCADA systems and sensor integration.
* Strong understanding of energy and mass balance in process design.
* Prior experience with startups or R&D environments is advantageous.
