Occupational Health Practitioner/RMN

Main duties of the job

1. Undertake comprehensive assessment of mental health and well‑being, including any impact on physical, psychological, or social functioning.
2. Communicate clearly through professionally written reports about impact on work attendance or capability while respecting confidentiality.
3. Formulate, negotiate, and communicate plans for reasonable adjustment at work in line with legislation and policy (Equality Act 2010, Disability and Reasonable Adjustment Policy).
4. Work as part of an MDT to provide holistic support and advice, and make referrals where necessary.
5. When clinically indicated, liaise with outside agencies (GP, mental health services, voluntary sector) to share relevant information.


Job responsibilities

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will provide a high quality occupational health service to LYPFT and SWYPFT and external contracts, in accordance with trust policies and procedures. The holder will:

* Assist and support the head of occupational health in delivering an effective evidence‑based occupational health service.
* Provide professional mentorship and supervision to other MDT colleagues.
* Undertake highly complex case management in line with the Equality Act 2010.
* Carry out a comprehensive range of occupational health activities including policy and procedure development and review.
* Act as department head in the absence of the head of occupational health.
* Deliver complex occupational health advice and develop specialised care packages for complex cases.
* Conduct audits of occupational health systems and procedures and make recommendations for improvement.
* Assist in the review of department policies and procedures, and support recruitment at pre‑employment health assessments.
* Attend relevant trust meetings and deputise at senior meetings.
* Administer vaccinations and immunisations in line with PGDs and vaccination procedures.
* Implement health surveillance programmes (e.g., spirometry) and conduct specialist workplace assessments (COSHH, DSE, PPE).
* Provide reports and statistics to the Head of OH to monitor and improve service delivery.
* Plan and deliver seasonal flu programmes and training of peer‑to‑peer vaccinators.


Communication and partnership working

* Communicate effectively at all levels within the Trusts.
* Use interpersonal skills in highly emotive situations to achieve the best outcomes.
* Support the Head of OH in providing a nurse‑led occupational health service.
* Liaise with other disciplines (infection control, health & safety).
* Contribute to and lead departmental meetings.
* Provide clinical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
* Participate in case conferences with HR and managers to provide expert advice.
* Engage in working parties to improve collaborative services.


Decision making and advice

* Manage and supervise junior OH staff and administration staff in the absence of the Head of OH.
* Prioritise and plan the client caseload for all team members.
* Be professionally responsible and accountable for own actions and outcomes.
* Manage external contracts on a day‑to‑day basis.


Initiating and implementing change

* Conduct regular audits of systems and procedures to improve service delivery.
* Assist the Head of OH Services and Administration Manager in developing income generation for external businesses.
* Supervise external contracts to maximise income generation.
* Suggest and implement improvements in service provision and efficiency.

Personal attributes

* Work autonomously and as part of a team.
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to work under pressure.
* Handle sensitive confidential information with care.
* Self‑motivated.
* Have a valid driving licence and be able to use a car during the working day.


Physical attributes

* Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post with a satisfactory sickness record over the previous two years.


Qualifications

* Level 1 Registered General Nurse (RGN).
* Accredited specialist public health community nurse (OH) to degree level on part 3 of the NMC register.
* Experience or teaching in ENB998 / C7G 7307.


Experience

* Substantial, significant, and demonstrable post‑OH qualification experience equivalent to masters level.
* Experience of delivering induction and training programmes.


Special knowledge / skills

* Knowledge of current OH issues.
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 in OH practice.
* Good working knowledge and awareness of OH and safety legislation.
* Deliver a full immunisation programme (MMR, VzV, Hep B, TB) and manage sharps incidents.
* Experience of clinical audit and clinical governance.
