Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Neonatal Unit pioneered the first Nurse led screening in Northwest London Neonatal network. This innovative service enables specially trained neonatal nurses to carry out ROP screening for eligible babies.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within a forward-thinking neonatal unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust to be part of a pioneering nurse-led Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening service that reflects a commitment to excellence, efficiency and family centred care.
We are looking for a highly organised and motivated ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) Coordinator to join our dedicated neonatal team. Working 3 hours per week/Part time
This is a pivotal role focused on ensuring the safe, effective, and timely delivery of ROP screening services for premature infants. You will act as the central point of coordination between clinical teams, families, and screening services—helping to safeguard the vision and future of vulnerable newborns
Main duties of the job
1. Ensure every baby admitted in the unit is logged into the ROP diary (eye book) using the same admission number.
2. Enter the appropriate examination date using the NNAP ROP calculator or the recommended screening period based on gestation:
3. Coordinate with Consultant Ophthalmologist and set out list of babies due for screening during weekly clinic.
4. Provide education to parents for ROP screening (ensure Parent Information Leaflet is given days/week prior to examination and this action is documented in Badgernet and ROP diary).
5. Communicate with the medical and outreach team to ensure that ROP screening and treatment details of babies for transfer out /discharge prior to examination date are clearly written in the Discharge Summary and that parents are informed of their follow up schedule.
6. Check the PanoCam™ equipment is in working order and that other materials needed for the screening (i.e., speculum, eye drops) are available.
7. Ensure strict adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) principles.
8. Organise follow up for each patient as per consultant discretion (after images reviewed). If already discharged at the hospital, coordinate with Community and Outreach Team
9. Email Booking team for appointment in HH-Paediatric OPD weekly for babies from home
