We are seeking a Principal Cloud Engineer (HPC) to provide technical and strategic leadership for the University’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Research Computing services. Situated within Digital, Data & Technology (DDaT), this role is central to enabling world-class research by ensuring our academic community can rely on secure, resilient and high-performing computing and data platforms. In this role, you will: Lead the design, development and operation of HPC and research computing platforms across on-premise and cloud environments Set technical direction for Research Computing services, aligning roadmaps with University and DDaT strategy Work in close partnership with academic stakeholders and DDaT colleagues to deliver reliable, scalable and cost-effective services that meet evolving research needs Champion service resilience and performance, ensuring infrastructure supports complex workloads and future growth Represent the University externally within the research computing and HPC community, building partnerships and contributing to sector best practice Lead and develop a specialist Research Computing team, providing line management, coaching and capability development Drive service quality and continuous improvement as part of the wider DDaT management team This is a role that combines deep technical expertise with people leadership, strategic influence and the opportunity to make a tangible impact in a research-intensive environment. What you will bring: You bring strong expertise in research computing or High-Performance Computing (HPC), alongside the leadership confidence to shape technical direction and deliver resilient, future-ready services. Ideal experience includes: Delivering and developing HPC or research computing services across on-premise and cloud environments Linux infrastructure, including scheduling systems, storage and performance optimisation Providing technical and architectural leadership for research computing in a complex organisation Enabling research excellence through high-quality digital infrastructure Leading and developing high-performing technical teams Working with academic stakeholders and translating complex research requirements into practical solutions Taking a strategic, service-focused approach that balances performance, resilience and long-term sustainability Additional information This role includes a market supplement of £8,000 in addition to the base salary scale. The total salary range displayed above reflects the base salary plus market supplement. The role title 'Principal Engineer (HPC)' is for advertising purposes only.
