This role offers an exciting opportunity for an existing Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist, or a Band 5 SLT looking to progress to the next step in their career. You will work in the Magnolia Unit, an inpatient bedded rehabilitation setting, supporting a range of service users including those post stroke and with other neuro and multi-pathology presentations.
You will be supported by the B7 SLT and work alongside a knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and a neuropsychologist.
There will be frequent opportunities for CPD, clinical supervision, development of your clinical skills and involvement with service development initiatives.
Main duties of the job
* Deliver a high standard of speech and language therapy services to adult inpatients with neurological conditions, including Stroke and multi-pathology presentations.
* Perform comprehensive speech and language assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, and develop an individualised treatment programme.
* Hold responsibility for own caseload and work autonomously, using regular supervision, peer review and case conferences, with available support from more senior SLTs.
* Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
* Conduct evidence‑based audit or research projects and provide recommendations to improve practice.
* Provide cover for other SLTs as required and support the integrated inpatient rehabilitation team.
Detailed responsibilities
* Professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work and delegated support staff.
* Comprehensive assessment of patients with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties, including diverse or complex presentations.
* Identify and refer patients for video fluoroscopy and other objective swallowing assessment techniques.
* Select and deliver specialised therapy programmes in line with evidence‑based practice, planning successful discharge.
* Take responsibility for a delegated caseload, engaging the MDT fully.
* Involve patients and carers in care planning using negotiation skills.
* Obtain valid informed consent and work within legal frameworks when patients lack capacity.
* Use verbal and non‑verbal communication tools to progress rehabilitation.
* Maintain accurate treatment records in line with Royal College of Speech & Language Therapist (RCSLT) / HCPC standards and RFH policies.
* Represent the therapy service at MDT meetings and integrate therapy into overall treatment plans.
* Provide specialist advice to colleagues on patient management.
* Offer supervision and support to junior staff and alert line manager to significant concerns.
* Use clinical outcome measures to demonstrate intervention efficacy.
* Apply clinical governance and risk management to own and delegated caseloads.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
* Recognised Diploma/Degree in Speech and Language Therapy (RCSLT).
* HCPC Registered.
* Evidence of up‑to‑date RCSLT CPD portfolio.
* Recognised Postgraduate Dysphagia Qualification.
* Attendance at relevant postgraduate courses.
* Member of RCSLT.
* Member of relevant CEN.
Experience and knowledge
* Minimum of 18 months – 2 years post‑graduate clinical experience.
* Experience working with patients with acquired neurological conditions and Stroke.
* Experience working within inpatient and multidisciplinary (MDT) settings.
* Ability to process and manage complex patient information.
* Extensive knowledge base underpinning broad SLT skills.
* Clinical experience in the NHS.
* Experience with Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC), both low and high‑tech.
* Participation in project or audit activities.
Skills and abilities
* Fluent in written and spoken English.
* Ability to prioritise, organise and work in a busy environment.
* Effective time management and adaptability.
* Keep accurate clinical case notes in line with legal documentation policies.
