Overview
Teacher (Primary), Deaf Support Facility role at East Sussex County Council. This is a maternity cover post starting September 2025, fixed term for one year. Part-time applications will also be considered – please indicate in your cover letter if you are seeking part-time or full-time work. Salary: Teacher’s main/upper pay scale plus 2 SEN points for a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf.
You will be based at Willingdon Primary School in Eastbourne, working with the Lead Teacher of the Deaf within the Deaf Support Facility. A qualified Teacher of the Deaf with primary experience is preferred; this position would suit an experienced teacher with a strong understanding of SEND at Primary Level or an outstanding Primary teacher with strong literacy and language development knowledge. Knowledge of phonics development is essential.
You will have a sound knowledge of the Primary Curriculum and know how to make it creative and dynamic to engage pupils who have speech and language difficulties associated with deafness. You will plan and deliver 1:1 and small-group interventions with a range of children across KS1 and KS2, focusing primarily on developing their literacy and language skills. No knowledge of sign language is needed; however, if you have signing qualifications, this would be a bonus.
Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver 1:1 and small-group interventions to develop literacy and language skills for pupils across KS1 and KS2 with deafness-related speech and language needs.
* Deliver an engaging Primary Curriculum and adapt teaching to meet diverse learner needs.
* Collaborate with the Lead Teacher of the Deaf and the Sensory Needs Service within the Deaf Support Facility.
* Support progression in literacy and language outcomes and track pupil progress.
* Signing qualifications are a bonus but not required.
Qualifications
* Qualified Teacher of the Deaf with primary experience preferred; or an experienced primary teacher with strong SEND knowledge at Primary Level and a focus on literacy and language development.
* Knowledge of phonics development is essential.
* Good understanding of the Primary Curriculum.
