The philosophy at the Kingston Hospital Maternity Unit is to put women and birthing people at the centre of their service. The unit are looking for support across a variety of departments. This role is specifically within the Birth Centre .
Tasks within this role include;
Provide women,relatives and visitors with a warm welcome
Be a supportive companion to women and visitors
Support to ensure the environment in the Birth Centre is maintained, e.g low lighting, calm & clean
Support at meal times with trays, clearing tables,refilling water jugs and with drinks etc
Assist with caring for the baby, whilst mum is showering for example (this may include changing nappies, dressing and providing advice and support where appropriate)
Respond to buzzers and refer to appropriate member of staff
Answer general queries about the hospital, ward and services
Support the ward with the coordination of visiting times
Transport notes, bloods to lab etc as required
General housekeeping duties, wiping down beds,restocking cupboards and cleaning equipment etc
Support with discharge, escorting and carrying bags for women and families
Assist with admin and audit work as required
Report any incidents to the Birth Centre Team Lead/Unit Leader
Infant feeding support
If trained in Maternity specific Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Acupressure &/or Massage- you will be able to
carry out these therapies whilst in role. Proof of certification and appropriate insurance to practice will need to
be provided at assessment if available.
This role is best suited to volunteers who are proactive in supporting a large team, enjoy meeting people as well as providing companionship and support during what can be an emotional journey for women. You will need to be able to interact with people from all walks of life and be able to listen to people without judgement.

Please kindly note, you will be given a 20-minute assessment on the week commencing either the 13th October or 20th October at Kingston Hospital.
The Mandatory training for this role will be on Tuesday 25th November 2025 .
All Birth Centre Volunteers will also need to undertake Neonatal Life Support training (which will take place on the Volunteer Induction day) as well as a one day Infant Feeding Study Day, before commencing in role.
