Job Summary
Applications are invited for the posts of Consultant General Surgeon with a dedicated specialty interest in Colorectal Surgery.
The postholders will join the existing surgical team within the Directorate of General Surgery delivering care across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and there will be a requirement to work across both sites.
Each post is full-time comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Main duties of the job
The post holders will join the existing team of 18 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery and possess specialist skills in Colorectal Surgery. Emergency work would be on a 1:6 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12-hour service at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Overall responsibilities include the coordination and delivery of strategic and operational aspects of General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area, reflecting national and local priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery.
Applicants should possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Experience supervising junior staff and teaching
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, GMC registration, and entry on the GMC Specialist Register
* Post CCT experience in colorectal surgery and emergency general surgery
* Research involvement and good IT skills
* Competence in laparoscopic surgery, colonoscopy, and emergency on-call management
Desirable
* Higher degrees, postgraduate certificates, research publications, subspecialty interests, and training course experience
