Digital Forensics Analyst – Computers

Job is offered by Surrey and Sussex Police.


Vacancy Information

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities and employing staff under their own force terms and conditions. Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. The following details apply:

* Division / Department: Specialist Crime
* Grade: See Advert (Grade 10 £35,772–£39,276; Grade 11 £41,487–£45,765)
* Status: Full Time
* Contract Type: Permanent
* Working Hours: 37.0 Hours per Week
* Shift Allowance: No
* Politically Restricted: No
* Location: Haywards Heath
* Salary: The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro‑rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

From day one you will be part of a policing family making a real difference. Our mission is to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe. You will develop your passion and interest in specialising in Computer Forensics, analysing data from seized devices across high‑risk, harm or threat crimes.

Key responsibilities include:

* Managing and examining high‑priority, technically complex cases not suitable for examination at local hubs.
* Producing forensic strategies in cooperation with the OIC/SIO to understand case requirements.
* Providing advice and support to officers regarding handling, recovery and preservation of digital evidence.
* Delivering written reports and statements for production at courts of law.
* Performing peer reviews and providing feedback to quality‑assure digital forensic reporting.


Skills & Experience

* Good standard of education with proven numeracy and literacy skills at a higher education level (degree or equivalent).
* IT literate, ideally with significant experience in a computer‑related or law‑enforcement environment, or possess relevant academic achievements (e.g., computer forensic degree).
* Good knowledge of digital imaging techniques, including electronic extraction of data and reporting.
* Strong working knowledge of various computer software applications and hardware assembly/disassembly.
* Understanding of ISO 17025 and its implications in forensic work.
* Experience of working independently in an investigative/analytical environment.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly engaging stakeholders using negotiation and influence.
* Problem‑solving in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
* Willingness to learn forensic computer software and pursue continuous professional development.
* Self‑motivated, working methodically and patient to deadlines with minimal supervision.
* Strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to motivate and develop others, providing feedback appropriately.
* Proven ability to manage high workloads with conflicting priorities.
* Awareness of exhibit handling procedures, especially continuity and integrity.
* Capability to exercise absolute discretion with highly sensitive and confidential casework.
* Required to undergo psychological wellbeing checks due to exposure to distressing material and images.
