The Role - Unix/Linux Engineer (SC)
As a Unix/Linux Engineer (SC), you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting Unix and Linux-based systems across production and development environments. The Unix/Linux Engineer (SC) plays a critical role in ensuring system stability, availability, and security, while providing responsive, customer-focused technical support.
This position is fully on-site in Barrow-in-Furness and includes participation in a rostered on-call support rotation.
What You'll Be Doing as a Unix/Linux Engineer (SC) Monitor, maintain, and support Unix/Linux systems, responding to incidents, service requests, and changes in line with agreed SLAs
Perform routine system checks, patching, and updates to maintain performance and security
Investigate and resolve system alerts, implementing corrective actions to minimise downtime
Troubleshoot issues across software, hardware, networking, and applications, working closely with end users
Manage user accounts, permissions, file systems, and access controls
Enforce system security best practices and respond to vulnerability alerts
Produce and maintain documentation covering support processes, incidents, and known issues
Provide on-call support as part of a structured rota
Skills & Experience Required Proven experience as a Unix/Linux Engineer (SC) or Unix/Linux Support Engineer in enterprise environments
Strong hands-on experience with: Solaris 10 & 11 (Solaris 8/9 desirable)
Red Hat Linux
Configuration and automation tools such as Ansible
Container technologies (Docker, Mirantis, Podman)
Experience troubleshooting complex system issues with a structured, analytical approach
Scripting skills (e.g. Bash, Python ) to automate tasks and streamline support
Familiarity with VMware and monitoring tools such as vROps
Strong customer-facing skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical users
Security Clearance SC clearance is required for this role
Candidates must be eligible to obtain SC, including: Continuous UK residency for the past 5 years
Meeting nationality and security vetting requirements
Some roles may be restricted to sole UK nationals
