The Opportunity – Generator Test Engineer
The Generator Test Engineer role is a hands‑on, technically demanding position focused on the testing, validation and continuous improvement of generator systems and associated technologies. You will be responsible for ensuring that diesel generators, hydrogen generators and lithium iron battery packs meet both industry standards and customer specifications. Working in a fast‑paced, live electrical test environment, you will play a key role in verifying product performance, identifying faults and contributing to quality improvements. This role involves close collaboration with engineering and quality teams to ensure products are reliable, safe, and fit for purpose for end users.
Day‑to‑day responsibilities
* Conduct electrical and mechanical testing of diesel generators (70kVA–625kVA), hydrogen generators and battery systems.
* Carry out generator synchronisation using Deep Sea and DEIF controllers.
* Perform advanced fault finding across AC/DC circuits, control panels, wiring harnesses and mechanical systems (fuel, coolant, oil, AdBlue).
* Test LV electrical systems and verify performance against specifications and standards.
* Read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
* Record test results, update build documents and ensure all work follows standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Work safely in a live electrical testing environment, either independently or as part of a team.
* Support continuous improvement by identifying root causes of faults and helping implement corrective actions.
* Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to enhance product performance and reliability.
* Ensure all testing activities comply with relevant electrical regulations and safety standards.
What this role suits you
* Strong hands‑on experience in testing diesel generators and electrical systems.
* Confident working with 3‑phase AC generators, control panels and synchronisation systems.
* Excellent fault‑finding skills across both electrical and mechanical systems.
* Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, high‑responsibility live test environment.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
* Highly organised and able to follow structured processes while maintaining accurate records.
* Interpreting technical drawings and schematics with ease.
* Proactive in identifying issues and contributing to product improvements.
* Solid understanding of industry standards and electrical regulations (e.g., 18th Edition, inspection and testing).
Minimum requirements
* ONC/HNC or higher in Electrical or Electronic based engineering or City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 Qualification in Electrical Installation or Maintenance.
* City and Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing or EAL Equivalent (BS7671) 18TH Edition 2382 Electrical Regulations. Recognised Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship Training. Experience using Deepsea / DEIF or Comap control units is a must.
* Knowledge of PLC/SCADA/MODBUS/CANBUS programming & configuration requirements preferred.
