The role
You will work within the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit: Organ Donation and Transplantation (BTRU ODT) at Newcastle University and the Department of Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgery at the Freeman Hospital to support and conduct clinical trials and participate in specialised clinical and diagnostic activities. The BTRU ODT and Freeman Hospital have a long tradition of excellence in research, and management of abdominal solid organ transplantation. The role will provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in organ assessment, organ perfusion, transplant surgery and clinical research.
You will play a key role in the conduct of national, multicentre assessment of OrQA (Organ Quality Assessment), a digital decision-making support tool for point of donation organ assessment. You will act as sub-investigator, assisting the chief investigator to deliver the critical OrQA-UK trial in the development of a game changing tool.
You will have the opportunity to learn about clinical trial design, outcome measures, regulatory requirements and ethical issues in conducting clinical research in organ quality assessment and organ perfusion. You will also develop knowledge and competence to conduct GCP compliant clinical research. In addition, you will be able to gain exposure to state-of-the-art techniques for abdominal organ transplants as well as updated management of these cohort of patients.
This post is fixed term until 1st August 2027.

4. Contribute to grant applications submitted by others and in time develop own research objectives and proposals for funding
5. Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids
6. Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations
7. Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications
8. Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
9. May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants
10. Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute
11. May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
12. Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment
13. Work towards a Higher degree and register with the University (PhD, MD, MPhil)
14. Support activities associated with BTRU OD-led clinical research grants, allowing for insight into networking activities and international collaborations
15. Publish and present high level scientific information including writing and presenting reports relevant to the work being carried out as part of translational research
16. Support the submission research proposals to funders where appropriate
17. Regular liaison with the chief investigator, principal investigators and senior members of the research teams to discuss the ongoing research and next possible steps
