While tattoos are permitted, including visible ones, they must not be deemed offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
For safety reasons, everyone training to be a prison officer needs a suitable standard of hearing without hearing aids. To work in a high-security prison (category A), you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
You will be invited to complete stage 1 of the online test to assess basic judgement and numerical skills. If you pass, you'll proceed to stage 2, which is a task-based assessment. Successful completion of the online tests will lead to an online assessment centre (OAC). After passing the OAC and being allocated to a vacancy, you'll complete a medical and fitness test, including eyesight, hearing, and health screening.
Pay and Benefits
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours weekly, with salaries reflecting these hours:
* 37 hours = £33,746 per year
* 39 hours = £35,875 per year
* 41 hours = £38,003 per year
All salary figures include allowances. The standard working week is based on a 39-hour shift pattern.

Job Offers and Merit Vacancy
This is a merit-based vacancy. Successful candidates at the online assessment centre will be added to a merit list for up to 12 months, with offers made to the highest scorers when positions become available. If unsuccessful, you may be offered an alternative role as an Operational Support Grade (OSG).
