NHS Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult FIRST Team Closing date: 23 June 2026.
Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and passionate NHS Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Old Age Functional Intensive and Response Support Team (FIRST) in South East Essex, based at Harland Centre, Southend‑on‑Sea.
Main duties of the job The team provides services mainly to functional older adult patients above the age of 70, referred from the South East Essex area for mental health disorders. The Dementia Intensive Support Service (DIST) is a partner team; the post holder will be required to provide consultant input to that service. Both teams function in much the same way, with the difference being FIRST sees functional patients, and DIST sees organic patients.
The post holder must be on the specialist register for Old Age Psychiatry or, in some circumstances, other subspecialties may be considered.
You must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.
Job responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and be the Responsible Clinician for the patients referred to the FIRST and DIST teams.
Review new patients in a timely manner and oversee the clinical management of patients in community for hospital avoidance and crisis interventions.
Be available for timely reviews and meetings, facilitate discharge planning to community, or raise to an inpatient admission as a gatekeeper.
Attend MDT meetings on inpatient units only for complex patients.
Support staff development and contribute to continual service improvement.
Provide clinical supervision to the SAS doctors.
Participate in clinical audit to ensure continuous improvement of the service.
Provide cover for holidays and absences to colleagues with mutual consultation and agreement.

Person Specification Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register or within six months.
Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
On the Specialist Register with qualifications Older Adult/General Adult/Dual trainee.
Postgraduate degree in psychiatry MRC Psych or equivalent.
Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
Clinical skills, knowledge and experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
Makes decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others.
Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
Transport
Hold and will use valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of proposed alternative.
