Job Overview
The Environment Agency invites applications for a fixed‑term Energy & Legacy Sector Advisor role (up to 2 years) to support the UK’s Net Zero strategy by regulating the energy sector, prioritising emissions reduction and energy security.
Responsibilities
 * Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance and training to stakeholders.
 * Develop strategy for our sectors and produce tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
 * Commission and manage external research projects as required.
 * Collaborate with internal teams and external partners such as DEFRA, DESNZ, trade associations and industry players.
 * Respond to incidents and deliver business continuity support during an incident.
 * Lead on the definition of sector standards, delivering strategic direction, guidance, training and environmental best practice.
Qualifications
 * Experience regulating energy‑sector processes, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.
 * Technical and regulatory knowledge, including control measures for emissions to air.
 * Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and to encourage consideration of diversity issues.
 * Strong relationship‑building skills with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
 * Proven teamwork and collaboration skills to achieve common goals.
 * Experience in stakeholder engagement and communication.
 * Capacity to provide statutory environmental and technical advice across a range of combustion installations, and to apply legislative knowledge in practice.
Contract
Fixed‑term up to 2 years. Primary working locations include Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham within the United Kingdom.
