Location:
Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Description & Scope:
The intern collaborates with the geomechanics team in AbTC, which develops Visage - a finite element geomechanics simulator.
Understanding the complex mechanical behaviour of fractures and faults induced by subsurface operations is crucial for providing timely insights to support operational decisions. While numerical simulators are the most common approach, users must be aware of both their capabilities and limitations. Before releasing any new modeling feature in the simulator, it is essential to evaluate its robustness and accuracy.
Responsibilities
* Evaluate and compare the commercial and pre-commercial modeling tools for mechanical discontinuities provided by Visage and Petrel geomechanics. These tools include the equivalent material model, multilaminate model, and interface elements.
* In collaboration with the geomechanics team, the intern will define a set of geomechanical models in Petrel, which will involve specifying geometrical configurations, field management strategies (e.g., production or storage), and rock material properties.
* Numerical tests will be conducted using either a personal computer or the AbTC internal cluster.
At the conclusion of the project, the intern will produce a technical report detailing the results.
Qualifications:
* Studying a PhD in Numerical Modeling, Rock Mechanics, Physics or a related discipline
* Oral and written communication skills in English
* Good motivation, autonomy, teamwork, and ingenuity
* Numerical Modelling expertise
* Geomechanics and/or Rock Physics
* Finite Element
