Overview
Swansea Building Society was established in 1923 as an independent mutual organisation owned by its members. It operates from branches in Carmarthen, Cowbridge, Mumbles and Swansea, where it also has its head office. It has a 9-person strong Board consisting of a Chair, the CEO, 2 other Executive Directors and 5 further Non-Executive Directors. It had total assets of £694m at the end of December 2024 and has gone through a period of sustained, controlled growth over the last 10 years. Its principal activity is the provision of housing finance funded mainly by members’ savings.
The Society is seeking to recruit two new Non-Executive Directors to join the Board.
Responsibilities and board expectations
The successful candidates must possess a strong appreciation of the role of a Non-Executive Director and will understand and be committed to the pivotal role that the Board plays in the effective and efficient delivery of the Society’s services. They must also be able to demonstrate independence of judgement and an ability to communicate with impact to provide constructive support and challenge. The Board meets monthly, in Swansea. A time commitment of a minimum of 2 days per month is required, and remuneration will be appropriate for the role.

* Experience of IT and digital transformation
* Experience and knowledge of effective governance at a senior level in complex organisations in the financial services or other sectors.
* Ability to make sound, open and impartial decisions and to employ complex problem solving, analysis and evaluation skills.
* Demonstrable commitment to high ethical standards of integrity and honesty, with a proven track record of upholding these values in previous roles.
* Recent experience of working at Board level in a similar sized or larger organisation.
* Understanding and experience of IT and change projects.
* Experience of leading change in a digital environment using recent technologies.
* Knowledge of the Welsh Economy.
* The ability to speak Welsh would be welcomed.
