Job Description

Senior Cyber Security Analyst

Location: Cheltenham, UK

Salary: £44,044 (including £2,658 non-concessionary payment)

Flexible working options include full-time, part-time, and compressed hours. Hybrid working may be available, with around 40% home working depending on business needs.

About Us

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber, and security agency dedicated to keeping the UK safe. We utilize cutting-edge technology, ingenuity, and partnerships to identify, analyze, and disrupt threats, working closely with MI5 and MI6 to protect against terrorism, cyber-attacks, and espionage. We offer a supportive and inclusive environment emphasizing teamwork.

The Role

As a Senior Cyber Security Analyst, you will be crucial in defending against various cyber threats such as malware, insider threats, DDoS attacks, and phishing. Your responsibilities include investigating alerts, analyzing logs and network traffic, monitoring security systems, developing detection content, using threat intelligence, and responding to breaches. Daily team meetings will review ongoing investigations and plan activities.

You will lead efforts to improve operational efficiency, mentor junior analysts, and provide expert guidance. Opportunities include digital forensics and supporting security incidents, staying updated with the latest cybersecurity tools and techniques, and reviewing past alerts to prioritize incidents based on severity.

About You

You should have a background in cyber security analysis and a passion for IT, with experience in host intrusion detection being advantageous. A solid understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems is required. You need at least 6 months of experience as a Cyber Security or SOC Analyst. Strong communication and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, are essential.

Training and Development

We support your growth through internal and external training, opportunities to work across various cybersecurity specialisms, and pursuit of industry qualifications like SANS and CISSP. Travel opportunities for conferences and staying current with cybersecurity innovations are available but not mandatory.

Rewards and Benefits

Starting salary: £44,044 plus benefits including 25-30 days annual leave, public holidays, employee recognition schemes, interest-free season ticket loan, pension scheme, cycle-to-work scheme, on-site facilities, and paid parental leave.

Equal Opportunities

We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups including women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and neurodivergent individuals. More information is available on our website.

Disability Confident

GCHQ is a Disability Confident Leader, committed to fair recruitment and support for disabled applicants. Minimum criteria for interview include 6 months of relevant experience and either management or delegation experience. Support for reasonable adjustments is available during recruitment.

What to Expect

The recruitment process includes application review, virtual interviews, and a conditional job offer. The process can take 6-9 months, including vetting, so applicants should continue current employment until final offer.

Before You Apply

Applicants must be UK citizens or hold dual UK nationality. The role requires Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Consider travel, relocation, and practicalities before applying, as the role is based in Cheltenham with no relocation costs offered. Applications from outside the UK should be made only when in the UK.

Right to Withdraw

The closing date may be advanced once sufficient applications are received. Early application is advised.
