Key responsibilities
* Act as a senior practitioner and member of the clinical team, carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles with a second person and immediately acting on any discrepancies.
* Practice across a range of specialties and complexities of surgery.
* Serve as a lead practitioner and circulating member of the Theatre team, supporting the operating surgeon and ensuring patient safety.
* Assist with the preparation and clearing of theatres, labelling and dispatch of specimens and compilations of the operations register.
* Maintain accurate patient documentation and follow correct hand‑over procedures.
* Attend on‑call sessions as required and work within HMT and local policy and procedures.
* Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct (or equivalent), managing own professional development and performance planning.
* Advocate, make autonomous decisions and support a culture of continuous improvement through audit, incident reporting and quality assurance activities.
* Maintain patient confidentiality in line with GDPR and safeguarding policies.
* Plan and allocate staff, manage equipment and stock, initiate procurement and keep up to date with peri‑operative initiatives.
* Develop effective communication skills, liaise with the Theatre Manager and contribute to a supportive working environment that promotes morale and well‑being.
* Provide induction, mentorship, training and, where qualified, undertake Surgical First Assistant duties.
Person specification
Essential Experience
* Able to scrub for all specialities and complexities of surgery (Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Urology, Spinal, Plastics, General Surgery, Minor Vascular and ENT).
* Experience teaching and assessing others on technical aspects of the scrub role.
* Background in a leadership role and as a Registered Nurse/Health‑care professional.
* Experience working closely with clinicians of varying seniority.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to motivate, support and encourage effective team working.
* Strong understanding of confidentiality and handling of sensitive information.
* Prioritisation and meeting of deadlines.
* Ability to use initiative and make decisions.
* Registered Healthcare Qualification and relevant post‑registration qualification (HCPC and/or NMC).
* Diploma/Degree level education or equivalent.
* Evidence of recent professional development.
* Intermediate Life Support certification.
Desirable Experience
* Evaluation of performance, evidence of reflective practice and self‑development.
* Completed competency in scrub for cases undertaken.
* Audit experience.
* Surgical First Assistant qualification.
* Teaching/mentoring experience and/or qualification.
* Post‑graduate qualification in peri‑operative practice.
* Advanced Life Support certification.
