An exciting opportunity has arisen at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for a role as a Band 6 Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic Specialist Anatomical Pathology Technician with fantastic communication skills and a proactive approach to join our team in Mortuary Services.

The successful candidate will need to have good mortuary experience and after initial training be able to take charge at one of the mortuary sites in the absence of the Mortuary Manager. The successful candidate will join the small but busy Mortuary Team.

The role is to provide a compassionate and customer focussed high quality mortuary service in conformance with the relevant legislation, code of practice and guidance to the Crown Office, local authorities, private organisations and individuals including bereaved relatives.

Main duties of the job

1. The post-holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of the Mortuary Service Trust wide; there are three mortuaries within the Trust, Charing Cross, Hammersmith and St Mary’s.
2. Work in this area requires frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations and in addition to periods of intense physical activity with the need to maintain concentration for long periods. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to organise and prioritise work is required.
3. There is the need to lone work and to also work well within a small team, sometimes under challenging circumstances. To ensure that the deceased and their relatives are always treated with dignity and respect and perform a broad range of technical work activities ensuring provision of an efficient service that is in accordance with Trust, Coroner's and Department of Health regulations and requirements.
4. The successful applicant will be expected to fulfil the requirements of the role as outlined in the attached job description.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria

5. Certificate & Diploma of Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
6. Good basic education to GCSE Standard

Desirable criteria

7. Level 4 (Diploma equivalent) in Anatomical Pathology Technology from the RIPH (Royal Institute of Public Health)
8. Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
9. Specialist knowledge and practice of post mortem techniques
10. Able to work towards level 4
11. Member of the AAPT

Experience

Essential criteria

12. Extensive knowledge of all aspects of mortuary management and autopsy procedures

Desirable criteria

13. Experience of working within an NHS environment
14. Previous experience deputising mortuary manager
15. Experience with handling multi faith deaths

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria

16. Practical and analytical skills associated with post mortems.
17. Able to work alone or part of a team.
18. Experience working within a mortuary environment.
19. Advanced sensory skills to enable the reconstruction and assistance in autopsies, including suturing.
20. Good working knowledge of the Human Tissue Act (2004) and HTA code of practice (Code B)

21. Experience of managing small teams
22. Mentoring trainee APT staff through the Level 3 AAPT qualification
