An exciting vacancy has arisen in the Transport and Highways service in Cheshire West and Chester Council for a Highway Engineer in the West Cheshire Area Highways office.
Reporting to our Area Team Leader and Principal Engineer, you will support a team who are responsible for a geographic area of the Council’s highways network.
You will be one of the first point of contacts for our Highway service, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to be responsible for dealing with all Traffic and Highways Maintenance enquiries from the public, statutory bodies, Parish Council's, Ward Members and the local MP's. As well as working within a close team of other Principal Engineers and engineers helping each other to innovate and develop this critical function of the Council.

We are seeking an enthusiastic person with excellent technical and communication skills, that understands the need for technical rigour and attention to detail. We would expect you to have significant relevant Highway experience as well as be confident in leading and guiding Network Stewards and their workload. You will be part of a high performing and ambitious team, supported and encouraged to achieve your goals and deliver your best.
A driving licence is essential for this role as you will be required to attend site meetings throughout the Borough, sometimes over challenging, sensitive issues. You may be asked to attend meetings out of hours either virtually or in person for example to represent the Highways Service at Parish Council meetings and to present all Highway matters on behalf of the Service. Therefore, you will need to possess excellent communication skills and be approachable as we are a strong customer focused service.
You will be based at the Area Highways Office in Guilden Sutton near Chester however you may be asked to work from our Area Office in Winsford. The role is flexible, and this means that the successful candidate will be required to work from a range of work locations within the Borough including home/office and can be from a range of sites across the Borough but predominantly from the Guilden Sutton Office. This is needed to provide cover for the office at times and answer any emergency calls throughout the day from the Contact Centre.
You will be given the opportunity to act as Out of Hours Duty Officer which entails making the decision on whether gritting throughout the winter is carried out and taking calls out of hours and acting on them as required. Overtime and Standby allowance is provided for this.
