Job summary
CPS Thames and Chiltern are delighted to advertise the role of Advocacy Clerking Manager. In this role, your job will be to lead a team of clerking assistants within the Crown Advocacy Unit (CAU) supporting the CPS’ Advocacy Strategy. You will be responsible for day-to-day management of the clerking team, performance and stakeholder engagement.
The Crown Prosecution Service is based in England and Wales. If you’re applying for this role and live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you must let us know when accepting this offer as you need permission to work from your home address if hybrid working is part of your role. There’s no guarantee that we will grant this approval.
You must be aged 18 before starting in this role. The start date is expected to be 8-12 weeks after the application deadline.
You must complete and pass your Civil Service tests by 23:55 13th June 2025 to be able to complete an application for this role.
As part of this role, you are expected to undertake direct line management responsibilities.
Job Description
Your roles and responsibilities:
* You lead and manage the team of Advocacy Clerking Assistants in pursuit of team and shared objectives, managing team performance and supporting the development of staff through training, clear accountabilities and decision-making abilities.
* You oversee management of Crown Court lists, by way of assurance check and Crown Advocate allocation.
* You are responsible for the timely briefing of all grades of in-house Advocates in line with the Crown Advocate Progression Framework and CPS briefing principles and supporting their development and training needs alongside Legal Crown Advocacy Managers.
* You influence local criminal justice stakeholders on a range of CPS and cross- CJS initiatives, using digital briefing tools and reporting to inform discussions.
* You provide monthly and ad hoc data reports and monitor compliance and timeliness of receipt of Crown Advocate fee logs and escalating where appropriate.

The Crown Prosecution Service has fixed rates for its Executive Officer grade – a developing rate (the starting salary) and a spot rate (the maximum salary). Applicants typically join us on the developing rate and, after completing a 15-month development period, move to the spot rate if your line manager confirms you’re performing the role to a satisfactory standard.
If you’re joining the Crown Prosecution Service on a lateral transfer from another government department, you should contact us about the impact on your salary and the implications of any time you’ve already spent at that grade before applying or accepting an employment offer. Your salary may be adjusted if your location changes when you join us. This adjustment also takes into account any existing allowances that may have previously been consolidated into your basic pay – there’s no guarantee that you can retain these when you transfer.

Clearance
If successful, you are required to secure a Disclosure and Barring Service check, for which you must have a current valid UK address.

Reserve list
If you're recommended by the selection panel but not appointed to the current vacancy, you’re put on a reserve list for 12 months. You may be offered another Advocacy Clerking Manager post in CPS Thames & Chiltern if a vacancy comes up during this period. We may also approach candidates on the waiting list to fill other roles that require similar knowledge and experience.
