Applicationsare invited for the position of Junior Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery, atLeeds General Infirmary.

Thesuccessful applicant(s) will join a large and enthusiastic neurosurgical team,offering a comprehensive neurosurgical service to the people of West Yorkshireand beyond.

Therole sits exclusively within the neurosurgical department which has threeinpatient wards, a neuro HDU and dedicated neuro ICU. The Department offers thefull range of neurological surgery, including neurovascular, skull base,neuro-oncology and spinal neurosurgery.

Thesuccessful candidate will work on the neurosurgical wards (including neurocritical care) and will, alongside the ACPs, provide the daily medical cover tothe neurosurgical inpatients. Neurosurgical JCFs also contribute to a fullshift pattern of on-call cover, including nights and weekends. This willinclude the assessment and treatment of acutely admitted neurosurgicalpatients.

Therewill be opportunity to attend neurosurgical clinics, MDTs and theatre lists(acute and elective). Formal and informal teaching is provided; in theatre andoutside of theatre. There are numerous research opportunities within theDepartment. A study leave budget is available, to assist with careerprogression.

Manyprevious post-holders have gone on to successfully secure NTN training posts,both in neurosurgery and elsewhere.


Main duties of the job

Clinical

Wardwork. Attend daily business ward rounds, clerk routine admissions and toimplement the instructions of the senior medical staff. Ensure that electiveand acute patients are appropriately prepared for the operating theatre. Ensure that post-operative care in the adultward and the High Dependency Unit is undertaken accordingly. Take part in theon call full shift system rota.

Operating

Undersenior guidance, the Junior Clinical Fellows will have the opportunity toperform some emergency and elective operations.Attendance at routine operating is encouraged.

JuniorClinical Fellows should attend the follow-up clinics are encouraged to attendnew patient clinics primarily for teaching purposes.

Administration

JuniorClinical Fellows assist in the preparation of discharge summaries and forcoding data for audit purposes.

Teaching

Instructingnursing staff. Assisting of 5th yearmedical students during their neurosurgical clerkships is also encouraged.

Research

Opportunitiesto pursue individual line of research or assist in those already in progress inthe department. Encouragement will begiven to prepare reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Studyand Training

Thisis a non-training post. However, the experience gained will be the same as thetrainees. The post-holder will get equalaccess to training opportunities including access to theatres and clinics andneuro-HDU on an equal rotational basis

Job responsibilities

Theposition of neurosurgical JCF will suit any motivated and enthusiastic juniordoctor; whether they wish to pursue a career in neurosciences or simply want tolearn more about this fascinating specialty.

Workingin such a busy department allows for the rapid acquisition and honing ofpractical skills (lumbar puncture, lumbar drain insertion, CSF sampling,arterial line insertion, etc) and we see the clinical confidence of our juniordoctors skyrocket, when they join our team.

Juniordoctors are actively encouraged to attend theatres, in order to broaden theirknowledge and to get directly involved with neurosurgical procedures, duringtheir time in Leeds.

TheDepartment is led by 15 Substantive and 2 Locum Consultant Neurosurgeons. The Neurosurgeons work with the OrthopaedicSpinal Surgeons to provide an integrated spinal service. The NeurosurgicalConsultants each have a comprehensive general Neurosurgical commitment, as wellas particular subspecialty interests.

Juniormedical cover is provided by two tiers; higher surgical trainees (formerlyknown as registrars and senior clinical fellows) and lower surgical trainees(formerly known as SHOs and junior clinical fellows).

Thisposition forms part of the lower surgical trainee cohort, however there will bethe opportunity for suitably experienced doctors to step up to the highersurgical trainee cohort, subject to the availability of any higher positionsand demonstration of outstanding performance at the lower surgical traineelevel.

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.

* Prior experience of working as a doctor in the NHS system for at least 12 months (excluding a clinical attachment or observership)
