Assistant Business Unit Accountant

As part of the Financial Management section, the post holder will support the Business Unit Accountant with monthly financial reporting for specific Clinical Groups, ensuring accurate, meaningful and timely financial information.
Key responsibilities include:
* Supporting the Business Unit Accountant on monthly financial reporting for the Clinical Groups, producing variance analysis, forecasts and trend analysis.
* Providing effective communication and financial advice to budget managers and clinical teams about income and expenditure trends and proposed management plans.
* Assisting in the setting of annual budgets for Clinical Groups, ensuring adherence to timetable and methodology, and monitoring budgets through authorised transfers and monthly budget control schedules.
* Ensuring that Clinical Group financial information in supporting systems (general ledger, budget setting system, SLR, ESR) is accurate, timely and up to date.
* Providing accurate and timely service costings for budget managers.
* Ensuring all Clinical Group income is captured, invoiced and reported promptly.
* Deputising for the Business Unit Accountant in discussions and negotiations with budget managers, clinicians and external organisations, including the Trust's commissioners.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Qualified AAT or AAT Member, or equivalent experience to degree level.
* Degree or equivalent higher level of education (desired).
* Member of HFMA (desired).
Experience
* Significant experience in a finance environment with accounting experience equivalent to NVQ level 5.
* Experience in financial reporting, reconciliations, control accounts, coding structures, budget setting, financial forecasting and variance reporting.
* Experience in budget setting and financial forecasting systems.
* Experience liaising with budget managers and external organisations.
* Desirable NHS/public sector experience.
* Experience supervising and training junior staff.
* Experience using NHS financial ledger systems and Business Objects reporting package.
Skills
* Good understanding of the NHS financial regime and policies.
* Advanced computing/keyboard skills, including Microsoft Office.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Capacity to prioritise work accurately within deadlines.
* Analytical judgement with complex financial information.
* Teamwork capability.
* Knowledge of control accounts, reconciliations, budgeting processes, professional accounting standards and legislation.
* Intermediate PowerPoint and Excel proficiency (desired).
