We are seeking a dedicated, caring and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join our friendly and inclusive primary school. The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers and the SENCO to support pupils with special educational needs, helping them to access learning, build confidence and achieve their full potential.

Position: SEN Teaching Assistant
Contract: Full‑Time
Location: Nelson
Start Date: 1st September 2026 or ASAP
Salary: £14.25 - £15 per hour

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

* Provide 1:1 and small‑group support to pupils with SEN
* Support learning both in and out of the classroom
* Assist with the delivery of personalised learning programmes and interventions
* Support pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural development
* Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCO and external professionals
* Encourage independence while offering appropriate guidance and support
* Monitor progress and contribute to records and support plans
* Help create a calm, nurturing and inclusive learning environment

Essential Requirements

* Experience working with children with special educational needs
* A patient, empathetic and flexible approach
* Strong communication and teamwork skills
* Ability to adapt support to meet individual pupil needs
* Commitment to safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare
* A genuine passion for supporting children’s learning and wellbeing

Desirable

* Experience supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH or speech and language needs
* Understanding of EHCPs and SEN support strategies
* Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
