Rotational Occupational Therapist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join our friendly and experienced Occupational Therapy team within South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust.

This rotational post offers a diverse opportunity to gain experience across acute medical, Acute and Elective Surgical & orthopaedic, Adult Neurological, Outpatients (hand therapy, rheumatology, adult neurological), Wheelchair service, Children’s community service, and Community Homefirst Intermediated Care.


Main duties of the job

To provide an effective service delivery and be responsible for Occupational Therapy support staff within the speciality.

To follow recognized professional standards, agreed therapy pathway and best practice in your designated area.

To manage an agreed caseload of clients under the supervision of a senior Occupational Therapist.


Job responsibilities

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

* Deliver a high standard of OT intervention and maintain service delivery by flexible, effective and efficient prioritisation.
* Apply the principles of the Mental Capacity Act to obtain consent from patients.
* Negotiate with client/carer to identify and formulate client centred SMART goals and complete designated outcome measures.
* Select and apply standardised and non‑standardised OT and other professional assessment tools.
* Plan, implement and review client‑centred interventions using graded activity.
* Interpret and analyse clinical, social and environmental factors to recommend best intervention and develop treatment/discharge plans.
* Have working knowledge of relevant external agencies and Trust policies for effective referral.
* Be safe and competent in the use of equipment for daily living and ensure support staff and clients/carers attain competency.
* Understand legislation and comply with the Professional Code of Ethics, Conduct and Standards for OT.

Measurable Result Areas

* Comply with Health & Safety guidelines, Medical Devices Policy and maintain a safe environment.
* Maintain accurate verbal, non‑verbal, written and electronic client records and report them appropriately.
* Contribute to KPI targets and record them for the speciality area.
* Prescribe and order equipment within budgetary limits.
* Identify stock and assist in annual stock take.
* Participate in research opportunities and disseminate findings locally.
* Assist in implementing OT objectives aligned with Divisional and Trust objectives.
* Participate in recruitment, selection and retention of staff.

Communications and Working Relationships

* Develop effective therapeutic relationships using strong verbal and non‑verbal communication.
* Be an accredited OT fieldwork educator and support fieldwork placements.
* Provide teaching and training opportunities for staff, students and other professionals.
* Assist in induction of new OT staff and students.
* Facilitate identification of training needs through supervision and appraisal.
* Notify the Principal OT of staff absences when senior staff are unavailable.
* Respect equality, dignity and diversity and provide a service sensitive to these needs.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
* State Registration with Health Care Professions Council
* Member of Professional body (COT)


Experience

* Clinical knowledge/training through degree or work experience to support Band 5 rotation
* Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team
* Previous Band 5 experience


Skills

* Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions
* Comprehensive clinical experience and knowledge of OT models and outcome measures
* Good interpersonal and organisational skills and ability to prioritise own workload
* Problem‑solving and managing an independent caseload of complex cases
* Understanding of Trust policies, data protection, equal opportunities and health & safety
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and national priorities
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Understanding of OT role and service needs
* Basic knowledge of clinical governance
* Ability to monitor and evaluate own performance and initiate changes
